Okay- is it just me or does those streetlight need adjusting? I came through there tonight (6:00 ish) and I think going northbound? there had to be over 20 cars+ waiting on Walnut and overspillage from the other direction (Taylor) too. It seems going northbound is the problem, like if you aren't on the person's butt in front of you, it turns, yellow-red. done! Does anyone know, is that controlled by eye sensor, hearing or light? What triggers it? Maybe it needs to be cleaned.

Big round sensor in the ground over to the right. You have to be right on it to trigger it.

I've known about the induction loop sensor for many years, but I have also been getting out of my car/van, running around my car/van (counterclockwise) and quickly getting back in. You mean I don't have to do that anymore? Someone told me about that as a kid, and I've been doing it ever since. I'm so gonna pound him.

Right! Something is amiss. Especially today after work. I know they've put the signs there telling people where to 'go'. They need probably LCD lights to point it out, but that's besides the point. Maybe the sensor is crushed?

They never had these problems when it was a stop sign.

Do you know every fire truck in Glen Ellyn fits through the underpass?

If the monkey thing doesn't work, try driving through backwards. The people on the other side will just think you going the same way, but very slowly.

Ground sensors and how to shorten your wait time (information directly from my transportation department that puts them in):

Roll over it completely, both front and back wheels must go over it, then backup and and roll over it again slowly.

Wow-I don't know if there would be room for that in that area. Plus there is always someone right behind me. It would work at my job on Bloomingdale Rd. when I'm leaving, however, none of that is marked. We have no idea where this sensor would be, unless it's uniform and lined up with the box(s)?

I am certain that the Underpass is an IQ test for the drivers of GE. In order to activate the lights one must be to the right of the center line and the front wheels must touch the white line. These directions are clearly printed in English on a sign for all to read. However, I am continually surprised how few Glen Ellynites actually can read! My favorite was a Village or Park District truck who had traffic stalled for many minutes because they didn't realize how to read the sign!

Something is definitely malfunctioning with the sensors. I use the underpass alot and have never seen the backup so bad on the south side of the pass as I have in the past week. Last night about 20 cars were backed up on Walnut and I counted about 8 on Taylor. The light would stay green for about 3 seconds, with about 3 cars getting through the underpass before it would change. Once red, it seemed that 15 cars would come through from the North side.

I'm convinced it is a North of the tracks vs South of the tracks conspiracy. Wink

OMG! You took the words right out from under my fingertips...I was just about to type the same thing!

Cool about the fire truck trivia. Do you have any other interesting Glen Ellyn trivia tid bits to share with us?

If you want me to post the manual on traffic light ground sensors, I can. It is quite long and there is a nice science to the madness, but it is a long read and will bore the average non-traffic geek to death. I really cannot explain in a short way why the drive over/backup/drive over again thing works, because there are so many variables in it, I got a headache just reading the first page. So here is the best I can do:

6 axels (meaning 3 cars) over a sensor will trigger most traffic lights.

I can't even imagine how a stop sign would work there! I'd wager there are a lot more clueless or selfish drivers today than when stop signs were effective there for traffic control. Wink

Survivor challenge.
Next time you go through look at the west wall up high. But don't look if you are faint of heart. Time for an inspection on that puppy.
When the railroad comes to shore it up this time, maybe we should take up their offer to widen it for cheap.

FYI,
The Monkey thing works every time.

Whatever do you mean, GEMOM2??? I mean, I was only flipped the bird twice today driving on Glen Ellyn streets on my way to work for going only 10 miles over the posted speed limit and stopping fully at stop signs. At first I thought they were waving hello, since giving the finger is just our form of 'ghetto hello' down on the southside here, but not after I got a look at those 'soccer-mom-on-crack-and-xanax' faces. Woooeeee! Big Grin

Oh yes GER, driving in GE is quite an experience. I thought that everyone learned in elementary school that when you wave, you must use all five fingers. My big question is, does is cost less to buy a vehicle without turn signals and brakes? I seem to have one of the few autos in town that have both.

I hear ya - brother (or sista?) See this several times a week. And that's just getting out of my driveway. My best one and this happened to me twice: being passed in a school zone -WHILE KIDS WERE PRESENT. Oh and I forgot, being passed while I stopped for a bus with red flashers too!
