I've got an older (01) Lexus that needs new motor mounts installed. I do almost all of my own repairs to my cars, but motor mounts are a bit too much for this shade tree mechanic. I have the mounts, just looking for someone who can put them in for me (and not charge me lawyer like rates, like the stealership does). It's a basic job, infact much easier than most cars actually. Any recommendations?

Helmut and Vito's. Ogden Ave in Downers Grove. I always bring my own parts in for them to install. Average independent labor rate. I once brought in a difficult to change lower radiator hose as preventive maintenance along with some other work and when I picked up the car they gave me the hose back and said it didn't need to be changed yet. I think most places wold have just gone ahead and changed it as extra $.

Gearhead in downtown Glen Ellyn. Though I have never had a misty-eyed inducing situation dealing with these blokes like Bio has had with the Germans and Italians in Downers Grove...I have recommended this place countless times and never had it come back to bite me in the arse.

I did have a friend who brought his 6 year-old Infiniti in for brakes...and they sent him home telling him he didn't need a brake job yet. Kinda the same thing.

Call 858-8630 and ask for Dan.

Oh...did I mention it is in downtown Glen Ellyn? And you can walk home if you need to? Or walk across the street to the train and pick the car up after work? Or have one of their guys drive you home? Downers Grove....indeed, Bio!! Big Grin

I'll second the Gearhead recommendation.

I was hoping Gearheads was going to be recommended, as it is so close to the house! I wasn't sure though, since every time I've walked by it, I see only german badges on the doors. I'll certainly give them a call soon to schedule the repair! Thanks everyone!

Hill Avenue Automotive...located east of the country club on the north side of the street. Adam is knowledgeable, fast, and very reasonably priced. Very personal, friendly service too- he's happy to give you a lift home if necessary and is willing to drop everything if there's an emergency.

Lol, I have heard good things about Gearheads. I just started going to H & V when the wife INSISTED on a Saab. They specialize in foreign stuff and are way cheaper than the dealer. Plus it is German and an Italian mechanics and they crack me up sometimes. I think cars are like members of the family to those nationalities.

I fourth it (Gearhead that is)! Dan and Dirk are great. I never thought there would ever be a mechanic who would refuse to take my money b/c my car didn't need whatever service I thought it needed (or the dealer recommend it needed).

Either one will do a great job, Clam is a bit bias towards Gearhead as he's been using the shop for storage for the past year.

858-8630

They closed early today because they are setting up for a homecoming party tonight....GW Class of '89. Even though I was Willowbrook Class of '79 grad...they invited me.

Alright, I'm tee'd up for the service tomorrow at gear head. Brian asked me how I heard of them, and I said "some guy named Clam on the GE chatboard. I figured since everyone argues with him, he probably knows his stuff". If I find a clam shell in the car when I pick it up, your cover is blown!

Haha, I was going to say Village Auto(?) at 5 corners, but everyone seems to recommend Gearheads. I had a similar experience at Village where I'd brought my car in for exhaust work (a 9 yr. old car at the time)that I was told I needed. I even had the converter in hand. The guy looked at my car and ran the diagnostics. Instead of changing the part and charging me over a grand in labor for it, as all the other places had quoted me around that price, the guy there was the only one to suggest taking my car back to the dealer and telling them to "flash" (reset) my computer. I did and my light went off and stayed off. Ever since then I've tried to take my vehicle there.

Either there or 3-D automotive on Roosevelt in Lombard. The guys there are great, too. Very helpful and decently priced.

Should I give up, or should I just keep chasing pavements....even if it leads nowhere - Adele
