Hey Clam, I think the lights are going up this weekend, but won't be turned on until Thanksgiving. As before-White lights in front, colored lights in the back. I'm looking for something appropriate for the side yard, I did find this Charlie Brown display and I'm thinking of going with that. I'm curious to see what other folks think, see the link below.

Charlie Brown display

No yard displays of any kind are appropriate in Glen Ellyn...period no exceptions. No reindeer with lights, no Snoopy cutouts, no Simpson blow-ups, no Santa on a sleigh. Absolutely no yard junk permitted....this is Glen Ellyn damn it! Only white lights, a wreath on the door, candles in the windows and white spot lights are permitted.

Get with the program Yoss.

And since Clamato is too beloved and two much of a chicken to answer, I'll answer for him.

1. He disapproves of the lack of uniformity in your lighting pattern. Either go with white (preferred) or go with color. It is not acceptable to Clamato to do one side of the house in white and the other in color.

2. He totally disapproves of yard junk of any kind but certainly disapproves of the Peanuts display.

Please let me know if you want Clamato to answer any more of your questions.

Technically, I'm in unincorporated GE-no street lights, no curbs.

This means I can "Go Griswold" with only minor scorn from the neighbors. Big Grin

To opine on behalf of Clamato again, although disfavored, going Griswold is quasi-acceptable as long as one really puts forth the effort. Lots of lit up reindeer, lots of yard junk, tons of lights of all colors, etc....thus creating a total conglomeration of X-Mas ****. However, achieving a proper Griswald home is quite an scary endeavor as if you don't do enough...if you don't go so far over the top....you have failed and well.....and solidified yourself as nothing more than an undesireable.

Good luck with your Charlie Brown.

It will be easier to preserve there too. If they get a good replica (which should be easily possible), we won't even know the difference. It's a symbol of our village, afterall....a SYMBOL.

And I agree with Yoss: The village has bigger issues to manage.

And we should take all the trees, and put them in a tree museum. (Apologies to Joni)

You can only use this if you have the music from the movie playing all the time. And have a Charlie Brown xmas tree. It is very nostalgic.

Come to think of it, the Park District should pipe the Charlie Brown music at Lake Ellyn when everyone is ice skating. I'll bring my beagle. Just kidding, my dog is only 1/2 beagle. I guess I'm ready for winter.

Not a bad idea, I've got the Vince Guaraldi Trio on CD.

which VGT cd? the charlie brown xmas cd? that's a good one. most folks recall vince's "linus and lucy" (also known as the charlie brown xmas theme). one of my favorite vince guaraldi tunes is "cast your fate to the wind." hauntingly beautiful. interesting side note: joe walsh did a guitar version of it on the James Gang Rides Again LP. it's pretty sweet.

Was that an intentional poke at my friend's girth? Pretty clever.

Charlie Brown is on order and should arrive next week.

The dogs will be trained to go after any potential vandals or Fremd HS graduates who might mess with the display. Wink

All this talk about trough removal makes me think what a big mistake Soldier Field made by taking those things out. For you ladies, I've included a pic as not to exclude you from my thought. That's the kind of guy I am.

Chris Wilson has once again sent me a personal e-mail about the trough, and there is good news:

Dear Clamato:

Wonderful News! Your voice have been heard. We have been assured by the Acting Village Manager, Curt Barrett, that the historic Glen Ellyn water trough will be reinstated in its downtown site after the holidays. In addition, it is to be appraised by a qualified expert in restoration to determine what repairs will be needed to return it to good condition.

The Village Historic Commission has also recommended the restoration of this beloved artifact and, most importantly, they have recommended to the Village Board that it be designated an historic landmark. This should be discussed by the Board in a workshop some time after the first of the year. We will let you know the workshop date as soon as we hear from Mr. Barrett.

We would like to extend our thanks to the many residents of Glen Ellyn who took the time to respond to our alert. The connection many feel to this symbol of our past was made clear when we received over 40 emails in only four hours! There was a very strong consensus in these letters that the old trough should remain in the heart of town. As many of you know, the historic significance of an artifact is greatly reduced if it removed from its historical context. It will be good to see it back where it was first placed 100 years ago

We are very thankful to the Village for listening to its citizens and then responding in such a timely fashion.

Anybody else find 40 e-mails in 4 hours less than impresive? 10 people could have sent one e-mail an hour.

Wonderful news. Not in my world. It just demonstrates that there is a vocal minority in this town who want the status quo for the GEBD. Trust me, I'm not basing this assessment on the trough issue alone. In a way it is appropriate that an old, decaying piece of GE's past is a symbol for the GEBD. While were at it, let's get a statue in the Prarie Path park of a bum.

Ok....I actually altered that to make it look like it was personally addressed to me. I think you know that I like to be important.

I'll bet Barrett buckled under for fear that the village's sever would collapse under the pressure of 40 or 50 more e-mails.

It might overwhelm the SERVER too.

As I've stated before, there are bigger issues in the GEBD that need attention. This seems trivial and stupid.
