Having a Jewel in GE is like having a new Toyota in the driveway. You used to be SO glad it was there.

How so? Granted, I seem to do most of my shopping at Trader Joe these days, but what's up with the Jewel these days? Malfunctioning software? Runaway acceleration?

I've become a Valli Boy. I drive my Toyota Corolla there and fill the trunk with goodness.

I'd buy a Toyota tonight if I needed a car, but I wouldn't shop at that Jewel if it was the only place in town.

Recently compared the Venza, Outback, and Passat - Passat ended up a distant 3d.

Well, on the plus side of the ledger, Jewel Foods Wednesday flyer show a 12-pack of Scott's Bun Wad [1,000 sheet rolls] for a Preferred Card price of $6.99.

That's a good deal if you need the paper.

We've been going to Valli, it's convenient and has a pretty decent selection.

And I learn about foreign cultures while I'm there. Wink

If Jewel can lower their prices by 20% [and it sure isn't on everything!] and Valli and Butera and others are STILL cheaper? I come to the conclusion that the locally-owned mini-chains have less overhead and can run price rings around the likes of SuperValu [Jewel-Osco] and Safeway [Dominicks].

Clearly, Valli isn't saddled with pricey union workers. They appear to use "guest workers" from Mexico.

Why anyone would pay Jewel deli prices when Valli's are half - or even less - as much, and every bit as good, I have no idea.

With the money I save by shopping at Valli, I might one day be able to afford a Venza.

Jewel vs. Jetta- I'd pay jewel prices before repairing a Jetta over 50k miles. Red Face

Peapod. I have splurged and treated myself to Peapod for months now, and will not go back. The delivery fee is reasonable and, I find, is offset by the fact that there are no impulse buys. The selection is good, they have specials and coupons just like the other stores, and I have yet to have had an item not in stock or replaced by something similar. (A problem they used to have in the old days - like 5 years ago, back when we first used them but stopped because of that.)

So once a week I spend about 5 minutes online, going through my previous order list, and voila. The next day someone else lugs it all to my doorstep. Love it. (And we get lots of produce and meat, and find it all to be of decent quality. Now, if I'm going to splurge on a humongous, expensive steak, I might go to the McChesney, but I've found their roasts, chops, and even filet mignon to be quite nice.)

Ok, so I usually shop at Aldi for virtually everything simply because it's affordable....at $250/month on groceries at Aldi, Jewel hasn't even been an option for me since I moved out of my mother's apartment all those years ago.

I've never even been inside Valli, but if what you all say (specifically BTN on the deli meats) is true, I think it absolutely warrants a visit this weekend.

Scribbler, thanks for the heads up on Peapod as well. Living on the 3rd floor of an apartment does not make lugging 6-8 grocery bags upstairs without help an enticing thought....perhaps I will check out Peapod's pricing as well.

P.S.
FWIW, I'd rather sink $200 more into my 12-year old Ford Explorer than shop at Jewel Wink

Hi,
It's funny that you posted about Aldi. I was going to start a thread on this and ask if anyone else has shopped there - and what they thought.

In the last few weeks, I have purchased a few items there and I am convinced these are virtually the same things that are sold at Dominicks or Jewel, only repackaged with a different name. For example: Orange juice (frozen concentrate) NO WAY we could tell the difference. Didn't have time to stop anywhere else, so I experimented and bought a bag of coffee for under $4. It tastes just fine. Maybe not Starbucks quality, but as good as some of the others that cost twice as much.

If you can get past the 'no frills' aspect of Aldi, I think it is quite decent store. Good bang for the buck.

Aldi is fantastic, Coveted! Most of the food there is really good, but it's nice to sometimes have the name-brand stuff....like mac and cheese makes a difference, that kind of stuff. Most of it's pretty good, though.

We had an Aldi thread awhile back- many fans here. Smile

Don't dawdle at the checkout. Next think you know your groceries are in the cart and everyone's looking at you wondering why you haven't paid yet.

Hahahaha! That's absolutely how it is....it's like, please have your money ready by the time you get to the register....in other words, have someone else with you who can get the money ready while you're trying to keep up with the checkout person on unloading your cart Razz
