Think you're the best BBQ chef in town? Glen Ellyn's version of Bobby Flay? Here’s your chance to prove it. We're planning the first -- and hopefully, annual -- Glen Ellyn Backyard Barbeque Cook-Off. We're looking for volunteers who can help organize the event by serving on the: advertising committee; entertainment committee; decorations committee; and food committee. Contact event organizers, Tom Koprowski @ koprowski1@sbcglobal.net and/or Tom Nelson @ tom.n@sbcglobal.net for details.
While Fan may have had the awesome idea (and absolutely zero followup) for a smokeoff of some sort, I think my idea is more critical to you guys getting volunteers to pawn all the work off on - name a date. Then people can start to commit.
I mean, until people know they'll be able to attend and taste Pig Daddy's butt, they won't jump at the chance to bring Fan's idea to fruition. Or is that meat-ition. Not sure, really.

Selecting a date is a matter of how simple or complex we choose to make this. Ideally, we'd like this to be a fun experience for all teams, regardless of experience. We'd like for it to be both a launch pad for 'local' and 'new' teams, thus giving them an opportunity to hone their skills, as well as a place for 'seasoned' teams to try out new recipes and techniques. The concept of “Joes vs. the Pros” was suggested on this board and merchants I have spoken to love it. It’s the hook that may just catch sponsorship.
But, soliciting those seasoned teams to compete is the difference between having the cook-off this year vs. next. Most professional teams are already booked through this year making it unlikely any would attend our competition.
We have lots of ideas, lots to learn and need to start getting organized, thus the request for volunteers.
I don't think you understand. Despite your whiny e-mail...I filled Pig Boy's head up with lots of ideas and contacts. That is, of course, the kind of dude that I am.
The first of which was to have a dry run (not dry rub) on private property and invite various press contacts and bigwigs to promote the actual event to be held in 2010. There could be 10-12 private participants making their food at home and transporting it to the temporary venue...perhaps in someone's (OK....Gus's) very large backyard. Knowing Gus, he would love to be known as owning the birthplace of the GE BBQ Challenge...or whatever it is called. Would help with spreading the word to people who you want to procure sponsorship $$$.

I like the idea of a dry run, it's a lot like what were doing with our Wi-Fi installs-prototyping before going to production.
Middle-I agree we need to post a date, I need to get together with the other Tom and see what's acheivable. If we run wit the prototype, we could pull something together fairly soon.

Brilliant idea Clam! I appreciate your suggestions.
I was speaking with a friend this A.M. who had suggested that the prelude be held in the Civic Center parking lot. The advantages are accessibility, observability and space.
A "dry run" would give us a wonderful opportunity to showcase the event to local merchants -- absent the typical, upfront hard sale for monetary sums which they probably have become so accustomed to. How refreshing!
Also, I am certain that if we keep it to a "dry run" we could put something together this year -- say by Septemberish. However, I do not want to crompromise the merit of the idea by trying to adhere to a short time line either.
The dry run would be a private event, no? Participants and guests? Therefore, I think someone's house would be a good choice. Plus...good luck selling that to the village.
I'll talk to Gus. He is always up for a party. His wife LOVES me...and....as an added bonus....looks like she could be my wife's sister.
Maybe have it on Glen Ellyn Place and use that park district party wagon. Maybe the street will be done by mid-September. Just a thought.
