Enjoy them if you still have them. For some reason, the village and our refuse company seem that it is a good idea to cut off yard waste pick up on the last Monday of November. Usually the Monday after the Thanksgiving weekend. So, if you haven't picked up your leaves by now and you're out of town for the holiday...here is my suggestion. With the advent of the giant and awesome green garbage cans, almost anything can be thrown away. No questions asked, no driver checking (EXCELLENT!!). If you find yourself with a dozen or so bags of unwanted leaves come the first week of December, simply put one bag per week into the giant, awesome green garbage can until they are all gone. You will save the $2+ fee...and something that is biodegradable will make its way into the landfill. "I didn't belong to any of the groups or cliques that are so prevalent in Glen Ellyn. with the mild weather I had wondered if they would give an extension. All my leaves fell only a week ago

Our leaves are still falling.
Mrs. '58 called the Village last week to ask if they were extending the pick-ups a couple of weeks like in (some) past years. No such luck. Our "temporary" Village Manager's decision? So we were very dissapointed. Again. A Village should listen and respond to resident's needs. And Fall was a couple weeks late this year, so...... |

Fish is pretty tight with one of the trustees. Those attorney types always stick together. I'll bet if he requests an extra week for yard waste pick-up...you'll get it.

If I was the Village Manager trying to prove the Village was on the side of the residents and responsive to needs, this would be a good time to make good and shine in one's job. This message has been edited. Last edited by: GESince1958, |

Leaf pick-up has been extended one week.
www.glenellyn.org For those of you who are so environmentally insensitive as to bag your leaves and not mulch or compost, this should come as good news. The bad news is that you are directly responsible for destroying the earth...so you have that going for you....which is nice. |

Every year I rake, mulch and bag my own, but this year I just didn't have it in me. Long story short, the service that agreed to rake and bag never showed. Any recommendations?

Just mulch. Grab your mower...take off the bag.....and run those *******s over....again....and.....again.....and....again. Three days thereafter, the leaves will be completely gone. And the earth will thank you....and your grandchildren will thank you. |

As an attorney...not a scientist...why don't you explain to the class how adding highly biodegradeable material to landfills...if that is in fact where they go...destroys the earth? My guess is that they are beneficial to landfills. Is it the paper bags you're concerned about? Also, I sat in your "World's Biggest Truck" on Saturday. It sure was nice, Al Gore, Jr. BTW, BB...another way to do it is to run them over and have them go into your mower bag. They can then be used as mulch...or....used to fill paper bags or garbage cans to the point where they will weigh appox. sixty pounds. No foolin' there, son. No air between the leaves means huge weight in the bags. And the breakdown process will start faster so it will be even more beneficial to the landfill. Just get your blower, blow everything into the grass and collect them in the bag. "I didn't belong to any of the groups or cliques that are so prevalent in Glen Ellyn. What is the reason we can't legally burn our leaves? I have a neighbor that burnes his every year in his "outdoor" fire pit?
Then he sits and burns a wheel watching the leaves go up in smoke... "I don't want to hog the limelight. This is Roland Burris' day." Blago |

It's illegal in DP County. Has been for about 30 years, IIRC. My guess is it has to do with air quality.
I remember when we used to burn our garbage. It was actually quite fun. WAIT!!! I thik I know that neighbor! "I didn't belong to any of the groups or cliques that are so prevalent in Glen Ellyn. I couldn't believe that people voted for me." |

630-407-6723 DuPage County Reminds Citizens Leaf Burning Not Allowed Penalties for Illegal Burning Can Reach $500 WHEATON, IL – October 8, 2004–The DuPage County Division of Regulatory Services today reminded citizens that burning leaves and other landscape waste in unincorporated DuPage County is not allowed under a County ordinance passed in 1990. The ordinance, adopted to protect the health, welfare and safety of DuPage County residents, as well as to maintain acceptable ambient air quality, prohibits residents from burning landscape waste such as leaves, shrub and grass clippings and tree limbs. Exceptions to the ordinance include recreational burning such as barbecues and campfires provided only clean, dry firewood is burned. Additionally, special event bonfires are allowed, with a permit from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and notification of the local fire department. "The changing of the seasons brings with it cooler temperatures and shorter days. It can also bring a tremendous amount of fallen leaves," commented Michael McMahon, Chairman of DuPage County’s Environmental Committee. "While it is very tempting to burn leaves, it is important to remember that burning is not the proper way to safely dispose of leaves. To properly dispose of fallen leaves residents should contact their local municipality or township and ask about their leaf pickup program." Open burning is considered a petty offense punishable by a fine between $100 and $500. To report violations of DuPage County’s ordinance please call 911. Thanks Clam....The Dupage Sheriff should travel down 53 sometime as they could make some tall cash to help balance that budget....

My guess is that they do not care. I may be wrong...but I doubt it.
BTW, has anyone else noticed that DuPage County Sheriffs have some sort of rule which requires them to speed excessively for no apparent reason while talking on their cell phones?
