Sorry Buggy, no Tweets. Knowing Ted, he may be working on a micro-blog called "Oinker" so we can send you some Snorts. Big Grin

Pig, I thought I remember some folks with electric smokers, no? I know someone had some car battery looking thing. Is that allowed?

Maybe it was just one of those temperature controlling fans. Are those allowed?

Let's be honest Middle, would it have really made a difference?

Hey Middle,

What you may have witnessed was an air-pit temperature controller. This device monitors the pit temperature and controls airflow through the pit so as to keep the pit temperature where one wants it. It does this through the use of a fan which attaches to the pit (in this case a Weber Bullet Smoker.) By turning the fan on and off as required, the air-pit controller can keep the pit at a set temperature as long as there is fuel to keep the fire going. The competitor who used this device was using charcoal as his fuel source. The air-pit controller, which ran on a battery was allowed.

Excellent question!

Exactly Graham. Thank you.

Middle, this spring come on over to my place and we'll make ribs on a Weber kettle. I am more than happy to share with you some things that I have learned. DTM can buy the beer.

I'm in!

DTM, for your unkind words, you'll be supplying us with a six pack of Sam Adams Utopias.

Can I come, too?? Would you guys show me how it works (the grilling thing, that is)? The last time I tried it (on my tabletop grill), I ended up with a fireball blowing out of my grill at my face (long story, but it ended well)....I am in clear need of some teaching in this area.

Six pack, what are you going to drink???

GESM2, of course you are welcome. We'll do it as soon as the weather gets better. Make sure you post what it is you like to drink so DTM can pick some of that up too.

Middle, without someone criticizing you, how would you know what you need to improve upon?

Actually I have a bottle of Hop Juice I'm looking to share with someone, but I'm not sure I want to hold on to it until next summer. Maybe that Yigo feller could whip up a batch of his brew and I would be glad to provide the cups.

Ok Middle, just throwing it out there - I plan on fine tuning my Q this summer and entering the circuit in 2011. You, DTM and me represent Glen Ellyn in some competitions. We train this summer and hit it in '11. What do you say? Think about it, ribs take 5 hours, butt takes 12-14. Once prepped and in the smoker there is lots of drinking time down time. I MEAN LOTS OF DOWN TIME...Just a thought.
