Remember years back I asked about our village motto and it was "Jewel of the Western Suburbs". Now it's Village of Volunteers. When did that change?
How I wish, how I wish you were here. We're just two lost souls Swimming in a fish bowl, Year after year, Running over the same old ground. What have we found? The same old fears. Wish you were here.
5 years less about 4, I'd say. Roughly early 2009. Stole it from Durand, IL. White collar crime that they are still talking about in Jo Davies County. But we haven't been much of a jewel, not even a cubic zirconium, for quite some time.

So it was. I stand corrected. And continue to laugh at what an tremendous fall from grace that we have had to go from "Jewel of the Western Suburbs" to "Village of Volunteers." What have we become?
Although that may have been the theme of the 4th of July parade in 2005, the village didn't steal it from Durand until early last year. Research that, DTM. You have connections at the Civic Center. Either way, Durand, IL can still smoke a fatty.

I floated the phrase "Glen Ellyn, Where History and Progress Duke It Out . . . With History Always Winning" past President Hase back in the day, but she went with the volunteer thing.
I spoke to a trustee who told me he thinks we started using it when the village redesigned the website in 2009. Other than the parade theme, he had not heard of it being used prior to that. Not surprisingly, many people deny having penned the motto.
BTW, read this on alwaysonvaction.com and got a wee bit of a chuckle:
"GLEN ELLYN VACATION RENTALS Known as the ‘Village of Volunteers’, Glen Ellyn is a perfect vacationing destination with a small-town feeling where you can book from a wide range of Glen Ellyn vacation rentals for your accommodation. Rich in arts and entertainment, tourists from all over the world come here to spend some quality time with family or friends whereby their accommodation is mostly taken care of by Glen Ellyn apartments.
The city of Chicago, one of the well-known holiday destinations, is just 23 miles away from Glen Ellyn and here you will come across plenty of Chicago vacation rentals within a reasonable price. Glen Ellyn is home to the pristine Ellyn Lake where you will find some of the finest Glen Ellyn accommodation options in close vicinity with rolling woodland hills in the backdrop.
Some of the major attractions that can be located within a short distance of the various vacation rentals in Glen Ellyn, Illinois are Village Links Golf Course, Willowbrook Wildlife Preserve, and Illinois Prairie Path. Besides, you will also find some of the chic boutiques and retail outlets within a walking distance of your Glen Ellyn villa.
From Glen Ellyn, you can also plan for a getaway to the nearby city of Glendale Heights that is dotted with a multitude of Glendale Heights vacation rentals, most of which can be found in the prime tourist destinations of the city."
Actually, the entire description could be highlighted as being hilarious, not just the lush description of Glendale Heights. Leads me to believe that they are not from the area.
Number of GE rentals listed on the site...........one.

Those in the know, knew that was the slogan back in 2005, those that don't, well, you know who you are.
Perhaps this would be a good next survey question from the village, "As a resident of the Village of Volunteers, what have you volunteered for lately?"
I am going to volunteer to take a number of our elderly folks incapable of traveling on their own to a splendid getaway to Glendale Heights' prime tourist destinations.

Don't forget the hourly tours at Menards starting at 9:00 a.m. Free ball peen hammers for the first ten kids under 10.
Ever wonder how people in foreign lands shop for food? Wonder no more, just load up the kids and head over to Valli. Marvel as they handle nearly every piece of produce before select the one that's just right
"Everyone thinks their opinion matters. Don't argue with a nobody. A farmer doesn't bother telling a pig his breath smells like s***."
The kids and I also volunteer at a husky rescue and Anderson Animal Shelter in Elgin sometimes....and I volunteer for TONS of stuff for their extra-curriculars....that's about all I've got.
Should I give up, or should I just keep chasing pavements....even if it leads nowhere - Adele
