the great horned owl flew over my head at hillside and carleton. since then i've seen and heard it (them?) all around that vicinity on a prety regular basis.

JRP - That's too much of a coincidence - Did you see that "w00t" is the word of the year from Merriam-Webster for 2007? Tell the truth.

Also, I can say with absolute certainty, that I would never have guessed the most active thread of the day would be "saw whet owl???" - WHOOO would? Wink

You have to keep in mind that I don't like squirrels and I do like hawks. The hawk flew away with his dinner only to drop it at 15-20 feet up. Not sure what became of that squirrel.

Seeing that was way cooler than watching one snack on a squirrel while in a neighbor's tree.

we've watched hawks hunt in our neighborhood a lot since they buzzed down the forest at baker hill -- which is kind of weird, considering how far from there we are. anyway, one day while eating on the back deck we saw a hawk swoop down out of nowhere (lots of trees in our yard), grab a squirrel, then soar up to a nearby branch and begin chowing down. we all supped together that night.

on mother's day last year, i was at my mom's talking on the driveway when we noticed two starlings doing "the deed" on her lawn. no biggie, birds and bees stuff, right? suddenly a hawk dove down and captured the poor female who was on the bottom during "the deed" and couldn't fly away in time (tough break, being mother's day and all). the hawk mantled over the starling and enjoyed its breakfast.

Thaten'd be the same one! At first, in the summertime hearing it with your windows open kinda freaks you out but you get use to it. The train still bugs me! Go figure. At least it doesn't scream (the owl) like the one in My Cousin Vinnie!

I have to watch my little dogs from time to time. Was up to Wisconsin by the River -Mississippi,over Thanksgiving, and the Eagles were all over the place. Had to basically hold the one dog constantly. Does anyone know if this is just a spring summer thing with the hawks or is it constant?

The two we had were more pale - like a smooth beige color and less distiguishable. Hmmmmmm....I thought the first picture looked more like the pair we saw.

The one I hear literally hoots in series of 4 or so, very early in the am, like 2 or 3 a.m.

Maybe it was a pair of young great horned owls that we saw. They were definitely light in color. The only owl I could find that looked right in color was the barn owl only it's face wasn't quite as distinctive. Anyway, I can't wait to see them again. I just hope one doesn't get the cute bunny that's been living in our yard.

next time you hear it, try and locate the bird. it is one big animal. very impressive. and when it turns to look at you, i guarantee that the hair will rise on the back of your neck.

I know on the nights when we have our windows open at night, it's directly behind us towards the train (north)a little, by the Hillside/Longfellow area, high in a tree. We can hear movement sometimes too.

we live in the same neighborhood. it's the great horned owl you're hearing. i've seen it often near the intersection you mentioned. high in an oak in the backyards. actually the first time i saw it was in one of the sugar maples on the NE corner of bryant and hillside.

We walked to Tap House Grill for dinner yesterday, (yes uphill, in the snow for about a mile!) and was hoping to hear some owls but maybe it was too early.
