The Glen Ellyn Message Board is back -- in a revised format that (probably) no one is going to like. But it has been said that if everyone is equally annoyed, angered and offended for different reasons, I probably did it right.

When I put the board on hiatus a week or so ago, I received email ranging from "thank you!" to death threats. Clearly, ya can't please all the people all of the time.

Anyway, here's the deal. First, techie stuff:

1) A few of you requested that I archive, rather than delete, old posts. So I have. Most of the forums that had posts with content that crossed the line are now empty (ready to start anew), but they also have a new "Archive" forum under them with the old content.

The archives are accessible only to registered members (about one out of ten visitors), and are read-only.

2) Also, all posts that have not been added to for 90 days will be automatically closed (meaning made read-only).

And now, philosophy:

3) We continue to reserve the right to delete any post for any, or no, reason.

4) Posts that are harassing, abusive or threating to individuals or institutions, by name, title or description, are not welcome and will be deleted. I will be editing/deleting such posts with a very heavy hand. As I've said before, my goal is to help Glen Ellyn. I have no desire to assist those wish to disparage and otherwise tear it down.

5) Nonetheless, those who wish to do so will find an outlet at nwburbs.net . All I ask is that you consider the impact your "just trying to help" post will have on potential shoppers, retailers and home buyers. As I've said before... "Praise in public and reprimand in private." May I suggest that if you have a gripe with the Village, the Police Department, the Chamber, the EDC or Go Downtown!, contact them directly. But please -- first make sure you understand exactly what their respective responsibilities are.

For those willing to come back and try again -- welcome!

I haven't posted on this board in a long time, but did visit it regularly. Ted, I want to thank you for having created it and for the work that you do maintaining it. Over the years I have found it useful and informative. It has also been a good place to discuss issues. It is unfortunate that some people have engaged in ad hominem attacks when unhappy about another person's point of view, but on balance I consider this message board to be an asset to Glen Ellyn and once again I want to thank you, Ted.

If only G.E.T.V. came back in a revised format.

Won't happen until a new administration takes office (at the earliest). The current administration chose to kill it. (The village owns the license, and can do with it whatever it damn well pleases.)

Atleast GETV is still on TV as we can see.

GETV/17 is now village-controlled tape playback only. No more public production studio. No more cameras or editing equipment for residents to use.

Here's what Community Access Television is supposed to be -- not run by the village, but rather arm's length from it. You're paying for it as part of your cable bill... but the village is keeping the money and spending it on other things (such as the Historical Society and the Glen Ellyn Children's Chorus).

The village, BTW, has its own government channel. One is enough; they're not supposed to have two.

Oh... we can also thank School District 41 and the public library for also contributing to the demise of community access television in Glen Ellyn.

But then... previous administrations simply watched WELF-FM, G.E.'s own commercial radio station go away... and gave away G.E.'s educational FM license WGHS-88.5... priceless assets. Gone forever.

I remember when GETV was booted out of 793 Main Street. It was spun in the school community as the administation being forward thinkers. The story being told was that this was done as a pro-active measure, in case the district would be using the building for educational purposes. However, the administration found new ways to expand into the space left vacant by GETV -- more high priced administrators. What a shame for the community -- losing GETV and gaining more dead weight.

What I don't miss about the old GETV studio is that u couldn't play programs on DVD only VHS. That's one good thing about it being in the civic center, other than that I've known about it not being a public enterprise since 2005.

First of all - Thanks for the wake-up call to everybody. I thing the posts got a bit off track and negative. I think of myself as a quiet supporter of the Village (I try to shop in town and keep dining and dollars local).
This has renewed my interest in trying to make good things happen for this town.
