I hope the links are helping to defer the cost of running this site.
That's the plan. So far, it appears it will do exactly that.

Does it help you financially if we click on a link occasionally, or does it just benefit Google?
Each click seems to throw anywhere from 5¢ to 50¢ my way (the former being most typical). So far I've raked in $8.87 in only five days! Already planning to tear down the bungalow and build a mcmansion.

Do you have any knowledge of the heuristic used to pick the ad links?
No... it's a well-kept Google secret. But obviously it's looking at the words on the page, and reacting according. Seems to be doing a reasonably "intelligent" job much of the time -- although, in context, some of the offerings are pretty funny.

There's a bit of a learning curve... I probably invested 2-3 hours to set it up (largely because different pages with my G.E site required different HTML scripts). But ... if I had to do it again ... knowing what I know now ... I would probably take 20 minutes.

The details of Google's ad algorithm are a trade secret... but I know sponsors can specify keywords. Meaning, if a Naperville-based business buys the keywords "Glen Ellyn," "Wheaton," "Lisle" etc., their ad will appear whenever one or more of those keywords appear on a page.
Ain't moderne science wonderful.
