Does anyone remember anything about an auction at Stacy's Tavern where Woody Webb would have been an Auctioneer? I found a cardboard flyer about it in the wall while doing work on the Drug store formerly known as Woods, Webbs and Craigs. (We call it Bell now for planning purposes) I was curious about the year. Also has the initials B.G. on drawing.
I am opening an old Fashioned Soda Fountain in the space called Bells & Whistles Snackery. I am working to bring the history of Glen Ellyn to this spot. I look forward to being part of the future of Glen Ellyn while remembering the roots of this wonderful town. The atmosphere will be Vintage 1900's with the technology of today. I am interested in hearing from anyone interested in giving their opinion. I would love to hear as much about this spacce and it's previous life as possible. I am also interested in any details available about the "Big Kernel" space.(We call this space KBell) We'll be opening the wall between the two and using that space to create a Youth Center with "Skill based(no guns, blood, violence)arcade games, pinball, kid karaoke, photo booth, toddler area with comfy seats for parents to relax...the village is working with me to visit the current codes that don't permit that and finding a way to make changes to allow it. It will also come down to the community being open to my creating a space for kids and families to hang out. There will be no alcohol. Hope to hear lots of feedback so I can incorporate my vision with the interests of the GE Residents and Government. Thanks!
I wish I could help you with your questions but I suspect a call to the Historical Society would help a lot. Doug and Mary Anne Ward are two of the most knowledgeable people around regarding historical information for GE.
I wanted to wish you the best in your new venture. I think both spaces and the way you plan to use them are something we really need in this town. And with that highly visible corner, I think you've got a great plan! Best wishes for fast progress!

Following Amy's kind words, I second the best wishes for success. It certainly does sounds like this will be an exciting use of both spaces. It would also appear that this will be a unique enough business venture to draw from other towns, which is something our downtown has needed for quite sometime.
Now we just need a men's clothing store. I'm tired of giving my money for suits to Mr. Shale. I would much rather support the town I live in when I buy these higher ticket items.

Sounds like a lot of fun (tho to be honest, not something I anticipate I'll visit too frequently!) I wish you the best of success. And maybe I'll stop by for a soda some day...
i remember it as webb's. it had that good old fashioned soda fountain. i'd always order a vanilla phosphate. most of my friends were green river fans. if i had extra money, a banana split. i remember being grossed out by the myriad gum stuck under the counter. also loved spinning in the stools. took a few girls there as a youngster. but mostly, hung out with the boys. we all loved it there.
my mom, father-in-law, aunts and uncles who all grew up in town remember webb's. they also recall a smaller fountain at heinz drug store which was a couple doors south of where paul's shoe service is. that fountain was gone when i was a kid in the 60s.
good luck w/ your new biz ventures. i wish my two sons were young enough to enjoy the arcade, but i think we missed that boat a few years ago. i'm sure you'll find plenty of youngsters salivating for a good place to congregate and have fun. i can promise you that i will a regular for a cold vanilla phosphate at the soda fountain.

Do you have an anticipated opening date? I grew up in GE and one of my earliest memories is going to the soda fountain there - I'm looking forward to stopping by!

Bell, I would be happy to offer anything I can to help you with your vision. I did take my first "date "to the original soda fountain there and might be able to stir up a memory or two. Feel free to e-mail or call me and I can swing by. Click on "Go" then " Personal Zone" Look in Member Profiles and you will find my contact info. Good luck til then.
Thanks for the many Well Wishes for Bells & Whistles Snackery. We are in the process of updating the 78 year old spaces to be used for 78 more years! We have gutted the spaces down to the bare bones and, with much positive and helpful input from the Village, have begun the long yet exciting process of creating the newest "Glen Ellyn Destination". I hope to cut a ribbon at the door sometime in Spring. The vision is to bring to life as much of the history of Glen Ellyn as possible. I hope to have many people knocking on the door to add their pieces of memorabilia to the rotating cabinet of items. The "Cabinet" is a Vintage piece said to be out of a Marshall Fields store. Every effort is being made to allow the history of those spaces to come back alive, yet I could use some input from the community as I've only lived here for 17 months. I'd like guests of BWS to walk out the door after each visit knowing just a tad more about the community they have chosen to live in and look forward to coming back! I wouldn't mind if the blog lit up about the wonderful Snacks they enjoyed...I also look forward to getting to know the future generations of Glen Ellyn and sharing the past with them.
Regarding the Family Entertainment Center (FEC) or (KBell). The goal, if approved by the Village, is to offer a place for the families of GE to gather and socialize while enjoying activities and fun Snacks. The scope of activities will range from toddler to Adult. It will include Skill based, violence/weapon free, "Arcade" games, Kids Karaoke, Open Mike Nights for talented residents and more. Having been a parent and an at home mom for 20 years, I believe I have an understanding of what will bring residents to town. Our previous home of 13 years was blessed to be the place all the kids went to hang out. The lessons I learned having 100's of kids and families in my home have prepared me for this venture. Bells & Whistles Snackery will be a High Tech yet Old Fashioned experience. (Where Old Fashioned behavior and manners will be expected0 While the spaces will be adjoining by way of an opening in the brick wall between them, the snackery or (Bell) side will be a peaceful space for good conversation while enjoying a snack.
I've been doing lots of research on Glen Ellyn and look forward to incorporating that into the experience. I am also excited about the way new technology will be utilized at Bells & Whistles to really give it the "Wow" factor.
I welcome all suggestions for Fountain items, Family Entertainment Center (FEC) thoughts and snack ideas. Feel free to e-mail me at bwsnackery@gmail.com. Look for me at Bells & Whistles Snackery during the Holiday Walk. In order for me to be fully informed for the upcoming Board meeting regarding the placement of "Coin Operated Equiupment" and "Indoor Amusement" not currently allowed in such establishments, there will be an opinion form available to sign. I am genuinely open to receiving input for and against. If I don't know what the community thinks about the idea, I can't go into the meeting fully confident that what I'm asking to do is in the best interest of Glen Ellyn.
I have many fond memories of the soda fountain at Webbs. My favorites were chocolate sodas and lime rickeys. Actually I got the recipe for lime rickeys from the soda jerk. I make it in the summer when I need a Webb's fix. LA, You are so right about the gum under the counter, but that is another story.
For peace of mind, resign as general manager of the universe.—Anonymous
Bell, I need to talk to you. Can you e-mail me at miramac4@gmail.com ? Thanks, Amy

Bell-It was nice meeting you last night and hearing about the store. Best of luck as you go forward. I was the one that mentioned talking to Diane of GoDowntown and help you get the word out.
I just found this thread now. This is an awesome concept, I absolutley love it. This sounds exactly like the kind of thing that GE needs in order to distinguish itself from the other towns. I wish you the best and will be sure to visit.

If any of you know how to contact "Bell", Please let me know ASAP. My daughter is writing an article for the Glenbard (West's paper) about businesses in GE that high school students should check out and/or look forward to....she'd really like to talk to these people but the deadline is Tuesday. Thanks!

Yes, I'm sure she does - Though I was the one that told her about the information I gleaned from this site. If the kid wasn't so overwhelmed by the amount of homework she has to do, she might actually enjoy writing this article even more. But, that's another topic and yes, I noticed the emoticon. Plus, I know you and knew you were jabbing in a fun way.
