Oh oh... Is less parking, not more, the wave of the future?
Cities rethink wisdom of 50s-era parking standards Perhaps Glen Ellyn is already the city of the future...? |

Unnecessary, repetitive and redundant quote removed. --Ted E.
Glen Ellyn's past practices of denying every parking variance in the CBD is a huge reason why our Downtown is in the state it is in today...IMO....not visa-versa. This message has been edited. Last edited by: Ted E., "Often Wrong, Never in Doubt" |

"Do you want to look like San Francisco or Los Angeles?" asked Donald Shoup, an urban planning professor at UCLA
- No you do not. Parking in SF is ridiculous. If you plan to attend my show, take a cable car. You can hop off right at the front door. (and probably be struck by a car circling the block in search of a parking spot that doesn't exist) |

I know this is not a popular opinion on this board, but my opinion is that parking is not the issue with our downtown - furthermore, we would be well served to follow the lead of the cities mentioned in the above article.
What is the real problem with our downtown, you ask? Well - if there is one, I would say it's the recruitment and onboarding of new, viable and desireable businesses to our downtown. I have always believed that people will find places to park / ways to get to stores that have things they need and want. Just look at Armitage St , Michigan Ave. , North Ave in the city - not enough parking around those places for everyone who shops there, but they all find a way to come. Same is true of our downtown. Personally, I have never had a problem parking in our CBD - at the most I have had to circle the block once or park 1 or 2 blocks away - neither is a problem for me or most others. I also believe we are entering an age where more people will be walking, riding bikes or scooters and taking public transportation. further reducing the "need" for a parking garage. Finally - let me say again, if there is something that our downtown / econ dev. groups can be working on, let it be the recruitment of good, solid, necessary businesses. |

I believe you are correct in that assessment about parking vs. businesses. However, you will always have that decision maker in some distant place, who has no idea of the area, saying that the number of parking spaces doesn't fit their model.

I can't say I've ever had a hard time finding a parking spot, and I certainly never decided not to go downtown because I thought I wouldn't find one. Or even vice-versa.
