Was skimming through the January 2008 issue and came across a new columnist. "City Girl" gives her 10 favorite restaurants in Wheaton and GE. Alfie's is #1 but #2 was even more of a surprise....Glen Ellyn Brewing Co. I checked to see if it was actually a January 2002 issue that had been delivered by mistake, but no luck. It's the current one.
Clam...Macaroni Grill is #5. Perhaps you've been too tough on it as City Girl clearly has her hand on the pulse of our restaurant community. |

Okay, I'm slow: you mean the *old* GE Brewing Co. where Figo is now?
Yikes. Actually, GE Brewing company -- in one of their *early* incarnations -- was pretty good. I remember it going downhill pretty rapidly, though, when they installed all the TVs hanging from the wall and decided it was a "sports bar." Figo? I dunno. Been there a couple times, but it's been remarkably unremarkable. |

Dude, you're killing me. City Girl and/or The Glancer obviously being either brain dead or using stock "footage", it does bring up an interesting subject that I have long thought would be fun. . . naming your Top 10 restaurants in the area. Not those crazy, hard-to-pay-for restaurants that Blue Echo recommended for downtown dining, but real places that you can actually dine at on a Tuesday night and not feel like you just spent a car payment. It isn't much of a stretch to say that the high-end restaurants in Chicago are excellent restaurants . . . but most of us aren't going to go to them on a regular basis. The GEBC got TVs on the wall after the owners sold it to some genius who thought that a town of 27,000, the majority of which are children, needed a sports bar. It didn't. If those were the only choices of GE dining, I would have to cook. What a hoot!

This is reminiscent of the "top 5 antique stores in the area" article that was in there a few months ago - all 5 were out of business. Maybe they outsource their writing to India. They do have lovely photos though, so they got that going for them.

I am told that #8 was Grady's American Grill...which also closed in 2003.
But I see The Glancer online...so there will be an explanation shortly. |

I have a feeling that sassy City Girl is being taken to the woodshed right about now.

Hello from Glancer Magazine, dba The Wheaton/Glen Ellyn Glancer. This is Lindy Kleivo, the publication's editorial director and founding publisher (630) 428-4387, lkleivo@glancermagazine.com.
First, thank you for your deep concern re: this month's issue and the mistakes included in our DINING SECTION and on PAGE 7 as it relates to PACIFIC BLUE. I would like to respond to each of your posts and also, to the many emails we have received over the last few days. Yes, CITY GIRL was incorrect in listing restaurants that have since closed, as the method for obtaining her subject matter was submitted to Glancer Magazine in a dishonest manner. I have handled this as necessary internally, and can assure you it will never happen again. However, I have elected not to disclose her name due to the justified dismay the community has shared over this unfortunate circumstance. While most have handled their correspondence regarding this matter with tact, sadly, many have not. Therefore, I would be concerned for her personal well-being, as she is a well-known community member and truly a good person who made a terrible error. Prior to press time, she assured me the information provided was correct and verified that she indeed WENT to these locations. It appears as though she used a local online source instead to take shortcuts and save time (which she should not have for this feature). This is where the information was posted incorrectly, but Glancer Magazine takes 100% fault and blame for this incident, as we gathered it and printed it incorrectly. We did catch this error, however it was after press time and it simply could not be changed. I made the executive decision to distribute the magazine, though flawed, due to the abundance of positive inclusions you will see as you turn the pages. Discarding these copies would simply not have been fair to those featured, nor to our advertisers. Glancer Magazine has since notified the outside site administrator (our source) of the outdated information and it is being changed. We have also carefully reviewed and updated our own editorial database to avoid any future incidences that may be incorrect. Also, we are currently looking for a local dining critic and local restaurant enthusiast to take over this section of the magazine. Interested parties may apply by sending a writer’s resume to lkleivo@glancermagazine.com. We are looking for an immediate hire. For those who are concerned about their tax dollars paying for this magazine, you can be assured that we are in no way affiliated with The Village of Glen Ellyn or City of Wheaton, and unless you are an advertiser or subscriber, you have not paid anything towards the creation of this publication. You would simply have received this as a free trial issue and you certainly have the option of removing your address from our mailing list. You may do so by emailing the numbers on your postal label and your mailing address to nhasan@glancermagazine.com. Glancer Magazine, Inc. dba The Wheaton/Glen Ellyn Glancer is a privately owned company. As the publisher of this magazine, one who has put her blood, sweat and tears into the success of this company and who has made several sacrifices to keep it alive, I absolutely should have researched this information further and I am deeply saddened that I missed this in my own holiday haste. There is simply no excuse and therefore, I take personal responsibility for this error and vow to pay closer attention to this in future issues. I am deeply upset about this and it makes attempting to grow Glancer Magazine an immense challenge. In order to do so, I must put my trust in others and delegate, but I also must be a realist and understand that mistakes can happen no matter how hard I try to prevent them. This incident is no-doubt devastating to our company, though The Wheaton/Glen Ellyn Glancer will go on, as it has been wildly successful and well-read across the board. In closing, clearly this information is indeed incorrect and I can only hope Glancer Magazine fans will see past this severe blemish and recognize all of the positive inclusions we deliver from month to month. Again, I am personally very sorry and here’s to a FLAWLESS February! Lindy Kleivo (630) 428-4387 lkleivo@glancermagazine.com www.glancermagazine.com |

Did someone really threaten City Girl's well-being for saying that she had "went" to these defunct establishments???!!! That sassy, street-smart gal made a little mistake that has plagued many high-end newspapers, magazines and network television shows. I hardly think it is appropriate for the community to turn on her in this way.
Best of luck to you! I like your magazine. |

Lindy,
Thank you for your very timely response! I think everyone on this BB can appreciate your situation and I respect the steps you have taken to try and prevent this kind of problem from occurring again. I concur with Clam - it is completely uncalled-for to have City Girl be threatened because she demonstrated that she is human! Keep up the good work - it really is a nice magazine and I hope it will continue to grow. "The most valuable things in life are not measured in monetary terms. She didn't mess up because she "is human", she messed up because she's an idiot. That being said, if she truly was threatened, that's pathetic. Who really cares enough to make threats....about a Top 10 list? Wow. And really, if it weren't for the ease of this board, who would care enough to write about CITYGIRL's plagiarism? Everyone knows that it was clearly a mistake/mess-up and that mistakes/mess-ups happen. .....CITYGIRL.....how funny. [EDIT - Just got an email from someone who wrote the Glancer - figures....nicest person ever - he wouldn't just snicker but he would take the steps to make it better. I should have known.] "Often Wrong, Never in Doubt" |

City Girl. . . from Anthony Street. Personally, calling her City Girl is a bit deceptive. Unless one considers GE/Wheaton a city. That being said, there is so much fuel for humor here, yet I think we should let this unfortunate incident go the way of Bistro Margot.
Now, who would like to offer up their Top 10 favorite open-for-business restaurants as I asked for earlier? |

Dragon One, Baker Hill......
Clam, are we talking only in GE or are we including neighboring communities? |
