So I am guessing you rate that place as an 11?

I ordered fish and chips - and the fish was just a (ex-frozen) breaded lump (looked awfully like the Jewel brand) - that had been deepfried to a burnt outside with mush as insides.

mmm..tasty.

and considering it was highlighted as a family restaraunt - there was remarkably little choice for the kids.

the staff were nice though. No disrespect there.

I like Alfies and Barones. IMHO Alfies has GREAT burgers and Barones has GREAT pizza (and the house salad is fantastic). I think the key is that you need to know what kind of restaurant you going to and what to order there. Put it in perspective. I don't go to either place looking for a gourmet experience.

Both Alfies and Barones are Glen Ellyn institutions which support community activities and provide a particular level of restaurant service. They are part of the community--I always see friends and neighbors at both places.

The most divisive and taboo subject ever discussed on this BB. Ever.

And for the record...I am not telling people to avoid these places...just that they could use a little freshening up. Alfie's...very rarely go. Don't mind it if you're looking for a hamburger. Best ever? Not even close. Barone's...almost the best pizza ever!! And, as I mentioned, they do a lot for the community. AND...they send you a free pizza in the mail after 20 orders. Am I so wrong in my contention that their other offerings could be made by 90% of us at home....sorry...made better by 90% of us? No. Of course not....it's an opinion.

So...Barone's...good pizza, great owners. Alfie's...never trusted them since they moved. And how the hell did they make their way into my exclusively Barone's discussion?

How are they related? Let me tell you how. They are both places that serve merely one quality product. Yet, they are universally revered and ardently protected by anyone who lived in Glen Ellyn while they were teenagers. Hold on, got to pick up the phone...that's probably my wife calling to yell at me.

Best burger-Brandt's in Palatine, I'm sure Potts knows of this place. I used to go there all the time when I lived in Schaumburg. There also was a pizza place called Charlotte's off NW highway, awesome pizza. Though a bit of a drive for GE folk.

Potts is Brandt's still open?

Back on topic. Since were delving into junk food, who has the best fries in the area? I used to love Jack Straw's, but they have been inconsitent lately.

ABSOLUTELY CORRECT!

Brandt's to Alfies is like Charlie Trotters to....uh, Barone's (insert obligatory pizza exception language here). That being said, besides the ribs and burgers, Brandt's suffers the same flaws as the other restuarants mentioned here.

And yes, it is still open. Although, my friends who still live there told me there are rumors of it closing and selling off the land.

You're right the ribs are great too. Place was always smokey though. I"ll have to make a point to stop up there soon, in case the rumor is true.

Actually the IHOP Cheeseburger is tops! I've had the mini-cheeseburgers in paradise at Cheeseburger in Paradise also, pretty darn tasty!

I cannot give Alfie's an 11, however if it was redecorated in a Stonehenge theme I would have to reconsider.

You guys are all spoiled. My dining "highlight" is now Friday "all you can eat" Fish Fry at the local Wisconsin bar. You don't know how lucky you are to have options that you don't have to drive an hour to get to.

surprisingly I had awesome fries at Wendy's on Roosevelt. Son needed them and actually initiated a discussion on top fries in the area. We decided that bag from Wendy's was top.
