I'm posting this new thread to elicit any experiences, positive or negative, with local assisted living facilities or nursing homes. We may have to find such a facility for my mom in the near future, and wanted to get as much info as I can. Thanks.
(Ted, might it be a good idea to start a new category with 'professional services' or something such as that?)
My mother stayed at Adollarata Villa in Wheeling, they took excellent care of her and were very supportive of our family when she passed in March.

Ask how many staff they have and what the ratio to residents is. Then ask how many of those are administrative and for direct resident care. Then ask how many of those that care for residents are Registered nurses, LPN's, etc.
The most expensive place in GE had no RN's on staff, a couple of LPN's and everone else only had certificates or nothing at all. Many didn't speak English. And they wanted to charge $11,500 for the first month. Yeee-ouch!
If it's just rehab or even hospice, Elmhurst Extended Care Center-Elmhurst. (SNF Unit or ECU) They were pretty good for short-term or skilled nursing services. It was a small place so for long term care or 'living' there may bother some families. The small place though made it very loving and cozy. I worked there for many many years. Also let your nose do the work. We did not have an odor.
I feel for you during this process-it's not easy no matter how much you know it's the right decision. The research we did was a couple of years ago, but we ended up with Lexington in Bloomingdale (on Bloomingdale Rd)for my father. Depending of it's for a man or woman, and what your price range is assisted living centers vary quite a bit-especially if you're dealing with Alzheimers. Sunrise is supposed to have a good reputation, and Brighton Gardens in Schaumburg (there's one in Wheaton also) seemed very nice espeically if you're looking for residence for a female. Best of luck to you...
Mrs. Spines went through it with her mother about 18 months ago. My mother-in-law landed at Lexington in Bloomingdale (regular care, not Alzheimers) on an emergency basis. Lexington was chosen primarily because of the availability of a bed. We were not pleased with the care she received and would have moved her if we would have had the opportunity.

See my post above. That was the place. This was in Nov. '07. I only shopped it (talked with Sandy), but we opted to go directly into hospice, which sadly, lasted 9 more days.
