Went to Thipi Thai tonight for a little celebration and found the food to be very good and service excellent. Another nice touch: The EDC or Chamber or someone has a women's barbershop quartet going to businesses and singing. They did two numbers during our dinner. They were fantastic and really created a festive envrionment. Perhaps the EDC has done something special this year!?!?!

If I were a murdering kind of man and a barbershop quartet, males or females, entered an establishment where I was dining. . . there would be four murdered male or female barbershop quartet singers in that establishment. Then I would personally hand myself over to Phil Norton. And it is my guess that Joe Birkett would decline to prosecute me. I really think that that is realistic scenario.

FWIW, I agree that Thipi Thai is good for what it is.

Music at my dinner table always freaks me out a little bit.

There's always a weird moment of self-awareness. "Um, there's some dude singing at my table. And here I am listening to it."

This happened at Macaroni Grill once. Our server busted out with some Verdi. Out of the blue. When he finished, he picked up one of the crayons on the table and drew his name on the table cloth/paper. (If you've been to MG, you'll understand.)

It was quite the flourish -- the singing and ability of signing one's name upside down on a table cloth.

I'll agree, too, about Thipi Thai. We've been there a couple times recently, and it's been above average.

Again and again. . . and yet again, I agree with you, t.a., that the majority of it is not Thai food. But whatever it is (let's just say it defies classification)) is hot/warm, fresh and palatable to me. I am guessing that you disagree with this assessment. Wink

i don't deny it's thai food. i just classify it as store bought, boxed thai food. so, yeah, i guess i really take issue with your "fresh" assessment (palatable, on the other hand, is subjective to the person. . . i mean, heck, some people eat brussels sprouts. . . yech!).

i don't get it, you're usually so intuitive about stuff like this. i figured it'd be a slam dunk for a man of your discerning taste.

we should talk in person more to help clarify these things. . . maybe a phone call.

The women's barbershop quartet didn't sing at any particular table - they just stood kind of in the entry. And normally, I'd find it a bit wierd but they sang two Christmas songs and they really were very good. In all fairness, my brother is a musician and, among other things, sings in a barbershop quartet. I like barbershop quartets - I have a great appreciation for their ability to harmonize and sing well (something I'm not very good at). That being said, Clam, I understand your perspective. Smile

And yes, Thipi Thai is not traditional Thai but it isn't boxed stuff either. Their potstickers are very tasty and my son could eat Chicken Satay all day long. I had the Pad Ped and found it very tasty - different than just about any traditional Thai I've ever had. It was very fresh and light so I didn't feel like I'd just sucked down a gallon of grease (which is a common side effect of chinese dining). Pad Ped had pieces of fresh green bean, green pepper, onion, bamboo shoots (sliced into julienne - closest description I can think of) with Chicken in a curry sauce. My kids really liked their Sesame Chicken which isn't Thai at all but they ate all their food and with picky eaters, it's pretty nice.

I won't go there often - it's too pricey but the ambiance really is nice and the waitress was very good.

Amy. . . if you brother pulls any of that "Down By The Old Mill Stream" bullshit in my presence, he'll be in for a bit of rhinoplasty. He'll be the poster child for Town Builders. Big Grin

TA, you have not had them prepared well then...I guessing like I had them as a kid, with the crap boiled out of them until they were soggy.

My preparation starts with scoring the bottom of each fresh sprout with an 'x' which releases the bitterness out of them when being par-boiled (I stress par-boiled here), after which I then slice each one into about four slices, put them with butter, olive oil and garlic in a sautee pan, and sautee over a medium-high flame for about 7-10 minutes (Julia Childs recipe). But the kicker is that I add cubed pancetta that I pan fry to crispy and then I add about 1/2 to 1 cup of cream that has been simmering with chopped shallots, to infuse the cream.

I'm telling you, if you tasted this preparation, you would be a reformed Brussel Sprout hater. My nephew and several friends are! Smile

So this isn't a hijack of the Tipi Thai forum, we have been and it is OK, but, as I have stated before, Nathan's Noodles on N. York Road in Elmhurst is F-A-N-T-A-S-T-I-C and more authentic.

Which is ironic given the "authentic" Thai name.....Nathan.

But in Thai, Nathan is spelled เธชเธงเธฑเธชเ, which is much more authentic but is much less marketable to us non-Thai folk. Wink

We ordered from Thipi Thai this week, and on the bag was stapled a nice little announcement about an anniversary bash they were having this Saturday...but we accidentally threw it out. Does anyone else know about this, and the details?
