Those that seem to hold all of the power in the village should understand this one.

I'll buy that T-shirt - as long as ""Its" is spelled correctly on the front!

Clam -I expect better of you. Also - this could be public service for the kiddies - they always need that and why not do it close to home?

No forums required. Is the other side - "No, I think we should leave litter and the butts cluttering the streets and I'm in favor of a public shower and tent city at Prairie Path Park." Let's vote!!! Roll Eyes

This is a great project for some high school kid who is looking to get into one of my 6 uber-elite colleges. Hell, it may even help him/her get into Notre Dame or Michigan.

My mistake...was done quickly. Didn't want anyone else to come up with that acronym before eye did.

I fixed it.

I can easily see this being a quarterly event. Perhaps we could partner up with Reid's Ride and have it the same weekend. Get the whole town involved. Even the president...assuming she isn't down south for the week.

I can see it in lights:

"Reid's Ride" partners with "Clear the Crap" to raise money for brain tumor research and to help bring much needed attention to the apparently "invisible" and "cyclical" problem of having crap all over the CBD.

It would be a hit.

Host the clean-up the down town on the weekend of the big garbage weekend. I think that is the weekend of April 26 & 27. That way if the village can't help haul the garbage away, we could just throw it out with all of the rest of the unlimited garbage. Think of what fun it would be to watch from your living room as the out-of-towners come trolling our garbage for the good stuff, only to find a bunch of doggie doo and cigarette butts.

Check out the Keep America Beautiful web site. They have a list of most unusual items found in a clean-up project. Rob, if you lead this clean-up crew, you may even be elevated to parade marshall status.

Do we get to wear fashionable orange vests? If so, count me in.

Hi,

While I think it is a nice idea for us to clean up our downtown area, I don't see that as a viable long-term solution. As fast as we clean it up, people can (and WILL) throw more crap on the ground. Any morning, you can walk in front of the two stores I mentioned on Crescent, just after 7:30 a.m. You'll find a bunch of cigarette butts from the people who come out of PADS in the early morning. I know this because I see it all the time.

What is frustrating to me is that nobody seems to want to address the homeless issue. Is it so politically incorrect to ask that they not hang out all day and trash our downtown area with cigarette butts? Are we a bunch of heartless people just because we don't want them taking sponge baths in our drinking fountains?

My solution is that we should start enforcing our litter AND vagrancy ordinances. When we do that, the word will spread and the 'regulars' who frequent PADS will start to get the hint that this will not be tolerated in Glen Ellyn anymore.

Just curious - what would it take to obtain some kind of official response to these types of concerns? Has this been presented to our trustees in letters, e-mails, and comments at meetings?

I readily admit that I care enough to complain, but probably not enough to actually do anything about it.

I spoke to a lady on Friday who seemed interested in my concerns, but nothing was done. I should know better to get names. I am usually good with that.

I was given a name this morning...sounds like the guy all the way at the top...but have yet to call him.

Again, my guess is that this is being read...by those on Duane and Hafsa, too.

Ah, yes, we have reached a rite of Spring, the bums are beginning to return. What I'm looking forward to is the all day charette that TBS will be hosting, where we are invited to walk the town, review TBS's ideas and offer our own for a better CBD.

I would encourage all of you to participate, since I think this would be a great opportunity to address the issue of letter & the contributions to this issue made by our lees fortunate friends.

I think the idea of enlisting the homeless to clean the streets is a great one, Bitterboy and I discussed this on Friday. You offer to pay them by the hour and have them work just a few hours each day. They get some money, some self-esteem and it will make the time go by faster. It's a win-win.

Who pays, and who monitors their performance?

Their wages would require some discussion, you could establish a special fee or work with Gov. Blago for a grant, he loves handing out money and it would be a primo photo op for him.

I'm thinking Officer Ricky could keep tabs on them or maybe a volunteer fro PADS. You could also weigh what they bring in and ensure they meet certain minimums.

I agree with Dinsdale for once.

I WILL NOT PAY FOR OTHERS TO DO IT. THE PEOPLE WHO ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE UPKEEP AND MAINTENACE SHOULD BE THE ONES DOING IT., I.E., THE VILLAGE.

What is so frustrating about GE is that there are hundreds of well intentioned people forming groups and brainstorming ideas so as to do the very things that those who are paid to do these things are failing to do. The Village is responsible for cleaning the streets and enforcing their ordinances....nobody else is.

They should be doing it! Period, end of story. If they can't figure out a way to do it, then fire that/those person/persons and get someone in that can. Repeat those steps until it is done. It's really very simple.

There's some entity in this town that has $750,000 burning a hole in his/her/its pocket and is just itching to give it away. They tried to give it to the Church at Park and Hillside, but it didn't work. Maybe they could donate some fancy motorized sidewalk cleaners to GE like they have downtown. . . "Caution, sweeper approaching. Caution, sweeper approaching (said in a vaguely British accent)."

Here is my idea to deter the homeless from sleeping on the benches.

I suggest that we give our kids airhorns and our permission to use them near any bench/benches that are/is occupied by a homeless person/persons. Big Grin

After all the warm weather is right around the corner and the kids are just itching to get out and about.

I know it isn't the right plan of action, but it sure would be fun!

Let's see them try to sleep on one of these.

Or I guess we could put fake metal people on all of the benches a la the bench in front of the fire station.

I haven't been downtown in a couple of weeks. Walking into Shannon's I noticed what an ash tray it has become. Of course I had enough time to look as I had to wait for the guy smoking his cigarette right in front of the door. I guess the 15 feet meant he would have to stand in the snow coming down. At least Santa Fe had their own guy also smoking in the doorway. I guess laws really do not mean anything. You would think that there would be some money to put out a container with sand to dump these butts. But then who would empty them?
