Woohooooo!! The EDC has apparently gone full-bore and strapped on their recruitment beanies...and they got us a gem. Directly west of Flowerama (best name ever for a florist!)...in the old Dunkin Donuts building...TITLE LOANS.
This town needs this kind of place. Glad to see the recruitment efforts are still priority numero uno. These folks deserve a raise! |

I know you were making a joke... but please, be careful before you tell one like this that soon becomes an (untrue) rumor. The EDC had nothing to do with recruiting this particular business; landlords can rent to any tenant they can strike a deal with. The EDC can neither force, nor quash, such agreements. Many visitors to this board believe that the EDC (and/or the Village) owns all the business property in Glen Ellyn and thus has the power to decree what goes where. They do not. The EDC works to recruit desireable businesses and match them with appropriate properties... but (obviously) landlords have their own agends and things don't always work out that way. |

It was a joke.
To reiterate, the EDC has had an uphill struggle selling this town in its present condition. And can I hardly blame them for our recent struggles. I blame the village for the most part. That being said, once we do spend money to fix our problems, I think it would behoove the village to bring the EDC back to the village's control, if it is not already...and replace key personnel. Ted: You have to admit that this property could have used the skill of a professional in recruiting an appropriate business. We have 3 of these businesses on Roosevelt Road, along with a Currency Exchange. Could EDC not have recommended/lobbied for a limitation on the number of these places? Or is it like banks - pay the rent and you get the space. No matter the clientele or lack thereof. Ronald M. Kas |

Flowerama is a chain of florists, by the way, so while the name is weird, it's nationally known.
And I think those two buildings there are the hardest buildings ever to reach; you can't turn left into them because they're right after the stoplight and there's no turn lane, and you can't reach them via that auxilliary road that goes behind McDonald's. So it's a problem of location, in my opinion - that's why there really haven't been any successful businesses there in my memory. |

That's what I keep telling the wife - I would buy you flowers but I can't get into the place! Truth be told, you can park on the east side of the building, too, just off of Lambert. Oh, and I think you mean the Wendy's, not the McD's. |

Wendy's, McDonald's - same diff, except that occasionally McDonalds has 49 cent hamburgers (like on tax day). All I know is that when Olsen Rug was in one of those two buildings, and we were looking to replace some carpet, I tried really hard to get into the parking lot heading west on Roosevelt and almost got hit from both directions, and made a LOT of people angry at me who wanted to fly through the stoplight - so I ended up not going there at all. Yeah, I know I could have driven further and turned around, but it was the principle of the thing. It was what they deserved for putting their business in such a stoopid location. |

A number of commercial property owners / landlords -- especially along the Roosevelt Road corridor -- are located out-of-state and own many other properties in the region or even across the country. They tend to be self-sufficient, often recruiting new tenants before the old ones have left -- the EDC (and the Village) discovers the "vacancy" the same time you do... when a "Coming Soon!" sign goes up in the window. Even when buildings stand empty for a while, phone calls to the owner often go unreturned. We can't force them to accept our help.
On the subject of limiting the number of banks (or whatever)... difficult to do legally. An entire category can be banned (e.g., "no banks!" or "no beauty parlors") but it's virtually impossible to limit the number of entities within a category ("no more than eight banks" or "no more beauty parlors allowed"). Temporary freezes can be issued ("no more banks for six months while we do a study") -- but such freezes can be for only a reasonable length of time. In the end, private enterprise rules. Municipalities have far less control over such issues than most residents might wish (yet more than the average business owner would wish... Guess it all averages out.) |

Clam, I agree (just this once) that the best thing that could happen to both of the buildings at Lambert and Roosevelt as well as the defunct petrol station at five corners is to level them and build something that can generate retail sales tax revenues. We can make it happen. Many competing towns have been doing it for years. But what do I know I am just a Builder.

FYI, Hinsdale and other communities have put a limit on the number of banks in their town. This was challenged and beaten in court also. So this can be done. If there is a will there is a way. |

Glendale Heights has also limited banks, successfully, for several years.
