Anyone that has spent time in the UK knows about Tesco. They are launching new "mini-Tescos" that compete with Trader Joes. They are putting one in Arl Heights and it's a concept that would take off in GE.

Please call these folks and show them the property where that dump of a Marathon was. Driving to Dominicks or Trader Joes/Jewel is to much of a pain for the north of the tracks-ers (when McChesney is closed).

Sorry for being a grump but I don't see the benefit in recruiting a business that would directly compete with 2 successful, existing businesses. I'd like to see something different from what we already have rather than a store that would only weaken others. And come on...TJ's is not THAT far away!

Noticed today that the paper is off of the windows at the future Bells and Whistles Snackery. I'm very excited about this place. I'd love to see more GE businesses embrace the quaintness and history of this town - I think GE could become a real draw. Now, turn Main Street between Penn and Crescent into Pedestrian area, plant a large, live evergreen smack-dab in the middle (to be decorated and lit at the Christmas Walk). Put in a bunch of benches and flower/greenery planters, echo the same planters up and down Main, up and down Crescent and Penn. Tear down a few of the god-awful buildings and re-build with classic, traditional architecture. Build a good parking structure - maybe two. WE could really have something here!

Nice thing about the old buildings is that they can be fixed, updated and modified! Look at the Bakery! The new stone work is such an improvement!

I kind of agree, that while I love those kinds of stores, we do seem to have two thriving ones already, and one not so thriving one (that deli/meat place, Bendes, or something like that? I always forget it's there. I went in once and wasn't impressed, and I like Trader Joe's better). Plus one of those is north of the tracks already.

Now, a good bakery. That's what I want here. A great bakery, not the Flour Barrel. Something that's open on Sunday mornings, too, for cryin' out loud! Some place that's warm and inviting, maybe serves coffee, too, with little tables where you can have a pastry and a cup of coffee. The Flour Barrel's cases are always half empty and what's there always looks really old. It's not a warm, inviting place at all.

Talk about sucking the life out of an area. We have already discussed the community's failure to think that walking a block is good for them. Look at Oak Park for guidance on this. They just knocked out the last vestige of the Lake Street pedestrian mall which remained on Marion Street (Look north from the inbound train). And the businesses thrive.

You knew it was just a matter of time before that thoughtful, intelligent persona she was promoting all of this time cracked to reveal her darker side. Maybe it has something to do with their new Subaru.

It's kind of like watching Britney! Eek

We are not Oak Park and they have a big, wooded park area just off what was their pedestrian area where people can hang out and sip on coffee. We have no such thing. Unless you count that little scrap of property on Prospect just north of the tracks....not exactly in heart of things. I've lived in towns where the pedestrian area thrives and I think it would work beautifully. Traffic would be better directed and less dangerous too. Think about it, coming north off the tracks, you go right and the only yielding is for pedestrians and the only traffic that may have to merge is the traffic coming from the left. Then, turn left on Forest (still one way), turn left on Penn (still one way but all the way to Glenwood - by the Glen Oak Restaurant). Turn left on Glenwood (make it one way south) and turn left on Crescent again (make it one way east from Glenwood. It's just a bigger loop but allows for people to actually walk around in the main downtown area with less traffic flow issues. We would also need to build a parking garage in behind the firehouse - or even build a whole new structure incorporating the firehouse on the lower level. Build a rooftop restaurant with planters and great views (I know this view from the free cherry picker ride I took with my son on the firetruck). Bring in one good anchor that appeals to a broad group of people (Old Navy comes to mind). I'm telling you - thriving metropolis.

Now, what's this Amy, Amy, Amy thing, Clam?

Funny, I have a meeting on Monday to try to work out some loans for my nearly bankrupt client who has his shop on Marion....he's certainly not thriving.

Has anyone heard what is going in the space of the jewel that is shutting down in downtown Wheaton?

From the January 9 issue of Oak Leaves:

"Nationally, retailers say this was a slower holiday shopping season, but many merchants on the newly opened Marion Street say it was an improvement over last year. "We were up this year," Scratch n' Sniff store co-owner Gail Eisner said. "That's a rare thing to be able to say." Crews hustled to complete the Marion Street opening by Thanksgiving, just in time for the holiday shopping season..."

Or maybe this. Not on the pedestrian mall, just south of the tracks:

"January 30, 2008

Condos? I thought they were looking for an upscale grocery store in that spot.

Wheaton Jewel to close within a month

I sent an e-mail to Sunset Foods suggesting they look into the space.
