I liken the message board to a dinner party where the conversation may start at one point, with an important topic being seriously discussed, but it becomes too heavy. The very serious subject starts to suck the life out of the party, so someone injects levity in the form of a digression or tangent to lighten things up. Fun ensues again!!

Typically, on the board, threads are less like a debate and more like a conversation. There are a lot of differing opinions here - and quite a few well-educated (or so they claim Wink) posters - and people with varied and interesting points of view. Take it for what it is, but I guarantee your serious thread will be hijacked at some point - but you can always start a new, fresh one. Smile

Alleluia! Floyd - I love you. You are the first person to ever agree with me on this board. However, I do take issue with one of your facts of "support." My 4,428 posts (and counting) qualify me for nothing. In fact, they may only qualify me for loserdom and/or blowhardedness.

I do take solace in the fact that Clamato's 8 million posts qualify him for much much worse.

Great analogy GEmom2!

I am somewhat in agreement with Firemouth from the aspect that I am often dumbfounded that most folks realize and agree that this message board DOES have an influence on things around our village, but at the same time these same folks can't believe that some of the negative stuff posted wouldn't make a difference to one of these guests that might be perusing the BB to get some sort of 'feel' for our town.

Sure, I don't think this message board should be all gumdrops and roses, but sometimes the negativity can go a bit too far and isn't of the most constructive or diplomatic variety. I also feel that this message board had become way too cliquish in many ways and that it has turned people off to being included or feeling like they can post their views, whether they are for or against the current 'clique.' I've had several friends in town and neighbors tell me exactly that. Is this what we really want this message board to be? Only inclusive to a select few who share only selective views?

Case in point, already saying that the 'Snackery' in the old Wood's/Craig's location is a poor idea and won't be a success, before they even have a chance to prove themselves is a waste of time and energy, in my opinion. Especially when everyone is on the supposed 'bandwagon' that our downtown needs help in getting back to being a 'destination.' For these people to take a chance in our downtown right now (Elizabeth at Honey included, among others) and put not only their money, but their time, effort and creativity into making something unique and special during these harder times, they truly deserve a little time and courtesy extended their way to see if they truly can make things a 'go' and improve the vitality, bit-by-bit, of our village.

Also, if someone has a problem with a business or business owner, I think it is way more constructive to actually approach that person and tell them the problem than to post it for thousands of eyes to see and influence if those folks will frequent, or even try, that establishment. Let's imagine if we were all were forced to be scrutinized in this fashion for our own livelihoods and see how long it would take for each of us to cry 'foul!'

GER:

I think a lot would agree with what you wrote, me included. However, what you wrote is nothing even close to what Firemouth wrote. My soap-box post merely cautioned against people on here taking this thing too seriously. You speak of cliques, and barriers to others sharing their views...imagine what this board would become if it took on some type of organized advocacy role. Talk about perpetuating cliquish behavior and barriers to others sharing their views.

Some on here already suggested straying away from talking about national political issues because there is disagreement amongst those of us who post on this board. That is just plain wrong. Homogeneous societies suck...and this board would be no different.

Hell, after all, I disagree with most everything that Clamato, Fish and Grateful write...yet they are friends. I can look past the fact that they are wrong and continue to enjoy their friendships. After all, I was the only one on here that supported Candidates, um, candidacy. And I think despite that, he has forgiven all those who spoke out against him...as they saw the error of their ways.

In sum, agreement amongst the masses sucks...conflict and disagreement is entertaining and enlightening.

This would be me. But don't worry, I plan to be wrong at least once more, with the intent of making my first wrong a right, right? I didn't realize how pathetic my statement was until I read this post. You are correct.

Who wrote that the Snackery will not be a success? I recall only saying that I did not understand the decor. Turn of the 19th century decor. That's all I said. I just don't feel kids will be attracted to it. That's me. FWIW, I hate the decor in Portillo's, too. All of them. The diner ones as well as the Al Capone ones. I am not saying I wish the business would fail simply because I don't like turn of the 19th century decor. Others do like it, I am sure. She seems like a very, very nice woman. I hope she hits a home run with this venture.

If someone wants to rent Glen Ellyn CBD real estate and sell games that generate quarters and fifty cent pieces, and sell hot dogs and sandwiches without liquor income (perhaps they will have liquor...not certain), then I support the living daylights out of them. Just because it isn't a business plan that I would fund doesn't mean that I am so arrogant that I would deny their right to attempt success.

Do any of you regulars on this board own any business or property in the CBD? or any other investments in Glen Ellyn other than your homes?

I don't. And I can tell you if one looked at who owned the property in the CBD, one will quickly see that there are very few property owners with Glen Ellyn addresses.

Again...I am very supportive of your business venture. Because I do not like the concept does not mean that you should not do it. Nor does it mean that I should keep my opinions tightly wrapped inside my head.

I am very supportive of GE business owners. Probably have spent more in downtown GE in the past few years than many.

For the record, my real estate holdings are concentrated in Villa Park, IL.

As I told Clamato - he is wrong. If we are talking about the Snackery, I think it will do very well. Nice owner, passionate, with a concept that serves a need. Believe it or not, Clamato is very often wrong...just look at his choice of dog names. Talk about lack of taste.

Wrong about what? That I do not like pictures of kids rolling hoops past a Model T on the wall of the dining establishments that I frequent?
