Shannon's Tuesday night pot roast - Wow, just had it last night and it was wonderful! They're going to try to have that special every Tuesday for a while then maybe put it on the menu. Man - o -man, that dish was good! Big Grin Probably better than the one I had in Hawaii.

I'm with you DTM, I've been staying away from places that allow smoking, just too many alternatives in the area with Wheaton and other towns/establishments already being non-smoking.

smoke free...what have I missed **does back flips**
I was at Shannons on wed for dinner, and thankfully we got seated in the back area. Everyone commented on how horrible the smoke was.

I would ask if you've been hiding under a rock but given your Avatar, your answer would likely be in the affirmative.

I've never been able to figure out why a business establishment would bend over backwards for a minority of people while offending the majority. That being said, I understand that a bar like that depend heavily on regular bar stool occupiers. But one has to wonder just how much more biz she would do if she had taken away the ashtrays. I've never felt that the owner was particularly brilliant...just fell onto a concept that people were apparently clamoring for (and IIRC she may smoke herself), but I feel more money would be made if owners were smart enough to ban smoking in their suburban restaurants. One of the few reasons that I do not dine there. Whatever...the state will be doing it for them in two months. F*** the smokers.

It'll be humorous to see the uproar from the non-smokers when, just like in the city, the smokers and the restraunteers/barowners, and eventually enforcement, ignore the law. If downtown was any model, the novelty will wear off after about 2 weeks.

Ah...but in small town suburbia...one phone call will bring the police to the door. Unlike in the city, the local cops don't have all that much to do. A few visits from the local beat walkers during the dinner hour and the owners will most likely comply.

how confident are you with this bold prediction? would you care to place a wager? and remember, you've suggested it will wear off in two weeks. and by that you meant the enforcement of the no smoking ordinance. . . specifically as it applies to glen ellyn only.

what should we wager?

I disagree. The restaurants near where I used to work in the city were smoke free...one even had a nice big bar...

There are so many alpha males/females with get-in-your-face mentality in GE...the smokers don't stand a chance. I really do stand up for your right to puff away, even on my dime (I guess the same could be said for my pizza consumption...slooooowly....killing.....me)...but I don't support your blowing smoke in my general direction. My eating pizzas harms no one but myself (perhaps my family when I drop dead), your smoke is a proven health hazzard to my young boys. Come Jan 1...I will not put up with it...and I am fairly genteel.

I'm not sure I buy the secondary smoke thing all that much. I suspect your and my kids get more carcinogens from the char marks on the steak and/or grilled asparagus they're eating.

And we all know about the latest attack on obesity. In the name of high health care costs, "They" will soon be after your pizza, and anything else that tastes good.

I think second-hand smoke concern is a no-brainer. And I also feel that it is something inflicted upon you by others. Nobody has ever stuffed a grilled asparagus down one of my sons gullets.

In the event of a bar's willful violation of the smoking ordinance, I will sue the bar on behalf of my kids and all of the employees...and will make a lot of money...rightfully.

Truth be told, I wouldn't actually do this...but I do think it is a good idea.

You are on a jury. The Plaintiff presents a case with the following facts:

1. No Smoking Law is in effect.
2. Smoking is taking place in establishment.
3. Plaintiffs (patrons and employees) gave notice of smoking to establishment.
4. Bar did nothing to get rid of smoke.
5. Plaintiffs inhaled smoke.
6. Plaintiffs have a real potential harm due to second hand smoke, including but not limited to cancer.

Defendant presents the following case:

1. Plaintiffs don't have a real injury.

What do you do?

Why not? If you see someone breaking the law...and the bar/restaurant owner will not enforce the rules...who else would you call?

I'll have no problem asking people to refrain from smoking. I've asked smokers to keep from blowing their smoke in my direction or holding their cigarette in my vicinity.

Once in a bar, I asked someone to hold their cigarette away from me, to which they responded-"It's a bar, what do you expect?" My response-"Call me crazy, but I expected to be served food and drink." I've never understood why SOME smokers think they are entitled to pollute my air? I don't belch in their face or fart in their general direction. Big Grin

some will. many others will stop patronizing the establishment that is breaking the law. either way -- lawfully or via free market -- it'll work itself out.

on another note, i think i may start a new thread after 1.1.08. it'll consist of photos of the pathetic smokers shivering and smoking out in the cold, snow, sleet and rain. what a delightful, and creative, montage that will be.
