You have to qualify "all of ireland and england", similarly when people make the same arguements for SF and Chicago... sure, there are restaurants and bars that are completely smoke free. Typically tourist places or places that aren't in any way an establishment that "regulars" would go. But throughout the neighborhoods, many if not most of the bars and restaurants are status quo, if not more stringent on ensuring that smokers and non are segregated.

I'm not a smoker, so I couldn't care any less, but here's how it will run (just as it has everywhere else they tried this)...

First couple weeks to 1 month.... Smoke Free
After 1 month to 2 months... when the regulars quit showing up that would sit around the bar all night and keep the bar afloat after all the dad's go home at 7:30 , the bartenders will say "Just keep the smoking to the ashtrays on the bar"
After about three months... the bar and the tables directly around the bar will have ashtrays.

That's just how it will work. If it doesn't, Shannons and Curly's, etc. will be out of business. Those places don't make money on the mom's and dad's who order a burger, one Tanq & Tonic and then leave.

PS. Let me know how the lawsuits go. As soon as you win, I have a hot coffee complaint I want to file against The Glen Oak.

my offer for a wager still stands. . . even though you've waffled on your original prediction of two weeks and have extended it to "after 1 month to 2 months [sic]." but if we do bet, you will need to stand pat on a time limit. and to be fair to me, that time limit will have to remain within two months (you're longest prediction to date). i'm a nice guy and all, but not that an easy a mark.

Sorry TA, I missed the post where you offered the wager, so I was unaware my two week extension on my prediction would be tagged as an official "waffle". I love a nice bet and would never welch on terms if I was at all prescient.

So the scope of this is, any bar in Glen Ellyn city limits that allows smoking anywhere on their premises (to wit, an ashtray is present) at any time of day by January 22, 2008 is a winner? Or just at Shannons?

i'd love to narrow it to just shannon's, but let's say food & drink establishments in the CBD. and an ashtray on the bar doesn't constitute smoking. there has to be regular smoking going on. here's your quote: After 1 month to 2 months... when the regulars quit showing up that would sit around the bar all night and keep the bar afloat after all the dad's go home at 7:30 , the bartenders will say "Just keep the smoking to the ashtrays on the bar"

also, not "anytime of day." it has to be during business hours only. i don't want to lose on a technicality.

fortunately, i have about 30 relatives and a many more friends who live in town. they can help me substantiate a claim, given these folks are always dining in town and someone i know is going to be in one of these joints on any given night. but really, given your quote above, verification should be when you alert me via this BB regarding this regular smoking happening around the bar and i go to the establishment that night to witness it myself.

and lastly, one question: you don't own or manage or have in anyway an affiliation with a food & drink establishment in the GE CBD do you? i do not.

those are my terms. stakes?

It's on the horizon.

How frightening is this story?

Apparently, it's much easier to control immigration when you are an island country. Razz

Wow, Shannons has never smelled so fresh. I actually didn't feel like I needed an iron lung while sitting in the bar area. The smoking ban has done wonders....
