I will give credit where credit is due, but our last 2 visits to Cab's has been disappointing. We usually opt to sit at the bar and have a cocktail or two, then order food. Granted Dave is a hard act to follow and it's unfair to compare his replacement to him but the bartender that was there the last 2 times we visited left a lot to desired. He is not friendly at all nor was he attentive. Even when you try to engage any sort of conversation with him, he seems annoyed. We experienced this both times now that he was there. We will still plan on going there, but in the past half of the enjoyment was the conversation with Dave. Roger, on the other hand at Vittorio's, knows how to make a good martini and how to mingle with his patrons.
I never know bartender names - Was Dave the tall, skinny dude from Lombard? Is he gone for good? I haven't been there in almost a month so I don't know what's going on. Actually we've been hanging out at Firkin's more. The food seems to have improved over our first experience there, and it's a nice cozy place. I'm sure we'll be back at Cab's before long - we feel obligated to keep all the local drinking establishments in business. A sure-fire way to decrease the downtown business district vacancy rate would be to fill all the empty storefronts with bars!
Dave was the taller thinner dark-haired one (rumor has it he is Sean Hayes' brother). He was always there on the weekends. He left about 6 or 8 months ago.

We started going there probably about the time he left, so I think we missed out on having him as a bartender. Too bad. I wonder if the rumor is true, and I wonder where he went.
They do look like they could be brothers and Dave had similar quirky actions & expressions, etc that lend truth to the rumor. I never had the nerve to ask him-even after a couple of martinis. He was moving out to Arizona to start a "business venture."
Hermsdaughter-I'm with you on the importance of how a wait person or bartender treats their customers. When I lived in Schaumburg, I used to go to Millrose Brewing all the time because the staff there were always friendly and provided great service. Unfortunately that is not the case there any longer, which is a shame, since the place has great ambiance.
One of the reasons, my wife and I like Potbelly's is the staff, nearly everyone has friendly staff and great service. I wish GE would get one in the Five Corners area. And it's no secret I like Firkin's because EPub always makes my wife and I feel like valued customers.

I choose my dinner establishments by the quality of the food. Cab's is fabulous! I have a glass of wine with my dinner and savor the tasty meal prepared by the incredible chef.

"I have a glass of wine with my meal and savor the delicious taste of the food prepared by the incredible chef." Nuts must be in the PR biz...that was so eloquent.

What's up with the transition from nice....(not fine)...dining, to a rock club, or blues bar on certain Saturday evenings?
We were there, 4 of us a few weeks back and had an 8pm reservation. We were seated late and in the midst of ordering our drinks, the place turned into a cocktail lounge and any semblance of quality dining and food service went out the back door.
If they are going to promote "special nights", then they shoud tell customers that are making reservations what the game plan is.
Trying to have a nice conversation while the 1999 graduation class of GBW that never made it out of Glen Ellyn is standing around your table and high fiving is not what we had in mind.
Additionaly, while I'm sure she's a nice lady, eating appetizers while Lee dances around solo, just doesn't cut it. Ala Helen.
We will not return and also will not suggest Cab's.
