I'm in, I just need to know the time. If you don't want to post the time here, send me a PM. Any excuse to get out for a cold one and talk smack.

This isn't going to be like one of those fake lottery drag-nets dragnets that the sherrif's sheriff's department does to capture ex-cons, is it?

As an occasional participant on the boards, I have noticed a plethora of comments regarding homeless lately.
For the past 3 months, I have called the police whenvever I or one of my employees (our business is on Crescent) are asked for money, followed, sworn at, or generally bothered by the panhandlers. Tony knows NOT to ask for 50c from me after I called the cops on him 10-15 times. Of course nothing much happened so he is still around.

Again today I called the police on the homeless man with the long grey beard who sits on the bench asking for help. He actually followed one of us towards our car pleading for help. To their credit, three squads showed up (must be a slow day writing parking tickets!). The policeman told me they were writing him a Disorderly Conduct ticket and he would have to go to court, probably not show up and then have a warrant out. I will be following up with them to see if this in fact happens and they arrest him on the warrant. The policeman said the "peddling" ordinance is unconstitutional and that the village board needs to amend the language somehow to allow them to arrest these folks. He claimed that the police have lobbied the board with no response and that having us citizens voice this idea at a meeting may help. I'm sure Hinsdale or other town without peddlers might have some useful language Glen Ellyn could use. Anyone know how to check the language of ordinances in other towns online?

I noticed possible talk of a group getting together to go to the next board meeting regarding this, if someone is in charge of this, count me in.

This is great news. I can't believe it.

I'm your person regarding the organization of a citizen's group to deal with these issues. We have not formally met yet; however, I expect to meet in the next few weeks. My initial goal is to gather ideas, hear everyones perspective about this problem and to form a unified plan as to what the best approach may be when taking it to the village. If you are interested, I will need your personal contact info in order to inform you when and where this meeting will take place.

Most towns' ordinances can be found on their websites. For example, you'll see our village code at middle, right Village of Glen Ellyn. Once you click on "Village Code Online", just search your key word.

My understanding is that it opens the 26th. I think I plan on going tomorrow, depending on Clam and definitely on the 28th with Yoss.

Actually, this kinda saddened me today. 'pleading for help'. How sad. Was he asking for money or help? I think there is a difference. To quote a few quotes ago, this gentleman probably didn't dream or even wish this to happen to him when he was 10 years old or 20 or even just a few years ago. What can be done? What does Chicago do? or a bigger City? I remember seeing this big time in San Francisco. Go figure. I chaulked it up to the thought that that city would have many people out and about because of the causal weather, no snow, not much rain, etc. etc. That's why I saw more there than here in Chicago. My thoughts anyways!... Frown

I plan to be there.

The whole thing is sad and the issue is certainly larger than GE. But, there has to be something we can do to protect people from being intimidated or harrassed while trying to enjoy what downtown we do have. Getting even more action going on downtown is another issue...
See you Friday.

C'mon, guy...that was totally made up. I'll be in Naperville for a double karate session tomorrow with the old kid. I thought you knew me better than that. I may see you on the 28th...but only if Yoss buys my drink. Cause he has huge bank.

Drink, as in singular? I think I can manage that. I hope they can make change for $1,000.

That wasn't very nice, you know that I am ultrasensitive, a lover not a fighter. After all those clever slogans I had suggested for mayoral campaign and this is the thanks I get? No respect!

Bitterboy, I'd like you to let me know when you organize something for the village response. I cannot figure out how to send you contact info without posting it on the board. If you know how to do this, let me know.

My daughter will do the representin' at the pep rally and bonfire. I didn't think the adults were supposed to go and infringe on the young people's good time. Smile

The best way to contact me is to go to www.nwburbs.net, find and click on my handle "Bitter Boy" and send me a personal message ("PM"). If you are not registered on that site, you will have to register first. Leave me your cell phone and name and I will call you.

JRPotts: I have not had but one single meeting. If you haven't noticed I'm neither the most articulate person nor the smartest on this BB. I tend to type whatever it is that comes to mind without really thinking too much about it, at least at first. The meetings I plan on having whether it be 1 or 10 are to collect, sort and analyze ideas. The meetings are also intended to help clear up any bias I may have, which may conflict with my good intentions. All this will help me/us decide on the best path to take. If I went straight to the source without planning, it would only result in one big mess.

You had suggested going directly to Norton, correct if I am wrong, but doesn't the police dept. report to the village? So isn't the village the ultimate "source" here? As far as I am concerned, the police are aware of the situation, but it is the village which may be resistant. I plan on going to the source, but first need to make certain all my thoughts are in order. Afterall, this is a very sensitive topic for most. I thought you might respect that. Talk to me, tell me where I am wrong.
