My nephew is coming in this week end to tour Northwestern. They want him to golf. Now why you would leave Arizona and come here, I don't know. I think part of it is the experience or to savor in the courting. Personally, I would stick with AZ/CA areas.

Any way, we're meeting for dinner in Evanston. Any suggestions?

About a year ago, this place was really good:

Pete Miller's Seafood & Prime Steak
1557 Sherman Ave
Evanston, IL 60201
Phone: (847) 328-0399

www.petemillers.com

They have/had a basil-marinated Ribeye that is really outstanding. Nice atmosphere. Reminded me of Wildfire.

Pete Miller's was always a good standby when we lived there, but I never considered it even close to being competition for what you get in the city. You want steak...drive 20 minutes south. If you drive into da big city...which you should...go to Keefer's or David Burke's Primehouse.

Go to Koi if you stay in Evanston. Two blocks south of campus on Davis.

I think you should change your BB name to Zagat's.

Lived there for a long time.

Did I mention that we went to Honey on Saturday, Yoss? Something you have yet to do, IIRC.

Yoss, you bring up some good points. He has been golfing and competing almost every day for the last five years. One of the reasons he is looking at NW is to gain experience competing in a different climate. I believe the rest of the offers are from Stanford, USC and other Ca schools.

I have concerns that he is still able to balance the academics with the golf. He gets good grades but really needs to work at it. He may have a shot at going pro but after that he needs to work at something.

Advantages to NW, his dad is an alum, lots of family here to support him. He has not been around snow since he was 9. Not sure how he'll last with the cold and snow. I think what it will come down to what program does he feel the most comfortable in. I'm just glad to see he has a lot of choices.

I recall you told me of some of your Evanston adventures when we had drinks at THG.

I must correct you-I have been to Honey on numerous occasions, I've just never sat down and had a meal. Perhaps this weekend, if Mrs. Yoss is up for it.

If your nephew finds Northwestern too intense (and let me tell you, those are some intense kids), he might want to check out the golf programs at some of the other Big 10's. Purdue, U of I (I know GE Fan will endorse this one), and Iowa , I've heard are good programs. I have also heard very good things about Marquette's golf program.

Hope your nephew enjoys his visit. Too bad the weather is still so cold. I'm not familiar with restaurants in Evanston but I do love the town.

Part of the reason for making the visit now is the weather. They want him to see what it will really be like.

Sunny and a high of 20 forecast for Saturday. That's pretty realistic for March. The wind off of the lake is pretty nippy this time of year. Partly cloudy and a balmy 36 on Sunday. Smile

I'd love to hear your reasoning behind this philosophy. I don't necessarily agree with you...though I'm open to hearing your argument counsellor.

Fair enough Fan. Your argument is congruent with what I guess I'd describe as conventional wisdom on the topic. I would add this: There are many, many other schools that a student can attend and have just as many, and in some cases, more opportunities. There actually has been a fair bit of research on this topic and while it certainly used to be true that people with Ivy League education had a greater chance at super-success, now it looks like one can graduate from just about anywhere and with a certain amount of "pluck", meet with the same success as those graduating from your top 6 (+4). Sometimes those folks from "lesser known" institutions are more successful...perhaps they don't expect the institution to open doors but that they will need to open doors for themselves.

If one looks at Medical, Pharmacy, and Law School acceptance as well as who is the CEO, CFO, and CIO of major companies, you might be surprised to see what institutions REALLY breed success. I'll give one example: Wabash College in Crawfordsville, IN. I don't recall their actual "rank" but in terms of undergraduate institutions with the most alums as CEO's, they are very high on the list...and it isn't prorated or adjusted to accommodate for the size of an institution - just a straight list. Wabash is somewhere around the top 10 and yet, they have only about 900 undergraduate men on their campus.

So, I stand by the philosophy that a student should go where they honestly feel they "fit" best. If that's Stanford, lucky them because that is ONE BEAUTIFUL CAMPUS! Smile

Sorry! Eek Must have misread something. I thought you meant that the NW golf team reps wanted him to see the weather this time of year.

I'm certain that your family is very...familyish.
