Especially when they are "athletes" in non-revenue generating sports, such as golf. Are golfers really athletes? I do not believe that the Ivy League offers athletic scholarships, but the schools do give preference for other types of financial aid to athletes. |

Doesn't (just about) every school grant need-based aid based on FAFSA? If so, than noting that NU does what (just about) every other school does isn't exactly an overwhelming testament. |

You had to know the golf comment would draw me out of the wood-work....Even though I was not on scholarship....truth be told, due to Title 9.....85% of the men's team wasn't on scholarship. For comparison sake, 100% of the girls team was. I assume by your comment that you are also against money given for: 1. Race 2. Financial need 3. Dance 4. Band 5. Musical talents 6. National origin 7. Etc. It's the student that is good enough to get into the school but not really great at anything else that you want to get money? Seems a little too inclusive. Fact of the matter is, people who are exceptional at something, and smart enough to get into the school, and people who add to the mix of diversity are going to get money one way or another. The run of the mill smart kid - gets into the school - and that's good enough by me. Dinsdale - I'm shocked that you are complaining about someone close to you getting screwed by the man. The more financial aid the kid gets, the better restaurants a he/she can go to in Evanston. Evanston has good restaurants.

You should know better than to make assumptions, young man (and I don't believe I made any particular comment about golf. Tho a full discussion probably exceeds this particular thread, I admit I'm not a huge fan of the role (and financing) of athletics in most large American colleges/universities. And that includes the school you and I attended and my kid just registered for classes at Monday. Do you know for a fact that NU offers scholarships based on the 6 characteristics you list? I don't know myself.
Please indicate exactly what portions of which of my posts here constituted complaints about anyone getting screwed. All of my kids considered, however briefly, applying to NU among other schools. I'm not at all sure they would have gotten accepted, but I knew that I did not care to pay that much for college, and I recommended that they not run up debt to attend there. Rather than complain, I consider myself tremendously fortunate that I will be able to help my kids get educations at the fine state colleges of their choice. BTW - to date not only have the state schools been 1/2 or less than NU, but they have also awarded my kids merit-based $. And if my kids wanted to attend private school, there are many of them that were eager to offer them assistance based on their grades and accomplishments bringing the cost down close to or below the state schools. So no, no complaints here. One kid I know who is attending NU is a great kid, but if he were not an athlete there is no way he would have been accepted on grades alone. So not only does he get an extra benefit of being accepted, but he gets comped as well. More power to him. Just doesn't give me any warm fuzzies. |

No. There are lots of schools that gap in financial aid. "The most valuable things in life are not measured in monetary terms. I can verify that scholarships at many institutions (including NU) are awarded for a wide variety of factors and that admission decisions are impacted by similar factors. Some factors include: Athletic skill, musical skill, cultural/racial factors, geographic/international factors, under-represented students, financial need, academic performance. Amy - excuse me, but that is a BS answer. I was not talking a talking about "many institutions", solely NU. And I was not talking about these factors impact[ing] ... admission decisions" at NU, but rather, whether NU gave financial aid for these. (Kinda obvious that academic performance might be a factor impacting admission decisions, no?) My clear (tho perhaps mistaken) impression is that NU DOES NOT award financial aid based on academic performance. Your media fans might be satisfied with such non-answers, but here on the boards we expect better. |
