how is the quality on the soda fountain side? Specifically, how good are their malts?

The renovation of that space is absolutely amazing! WELL DONE!

The only negative I have about the place is that the kids should be banned from the place, the fountain lines should be converted to beer lines and alcohol should be stocked next to the ice cream as the place is so warm, comforting and hospitable, it should be a bar.

She really does have an eye...I'll give her that. Went there on day one. The opening weeks B.S. must be frustrating as hell...like feeling your way around in the dark. She'll get it running smoothly...my prediction. She is very welcoming even during a firestorm.

Now if could just figure out a way to ban children from the place and get those video games out of there...then she may be on to something. Big Grin

That's an interesting concept! Pretty sure it won't happen in the near future. Yes, Fan I was there again today.

It did look nice inside. We did not have a chance to eat or drink there since the kids were getting fidgety. I did see the menu board showed their malt was over $4. For that price it had better be the best damn malt in the whole wide world...

I went last weekend. Some service kinks still need to be worked out.

They've done a really nice job with the decor. But it seemed like an odd setup. I don't think I'd have had the "kitchen" out in the open. There're some things you don't need to see - like supply boxes, stacks of basket plates, etc. And if they'd put the kitchen / soda fountain in the middle of the space, they could have opened up window seating all along the street there. I'm sure there was a reason for it - just seemed odd.

The food that I had was good. But my (culinary-ly boring) kids had a hard time finding something on the menu to pick (they're not fans of chipotle mayo, etc.). I'd suggest some straight forward grilled cheeses with sliced apples and the like for the non-adventurous kids of the world. And there were about 10 soups listed but only two available. Didn't seem like there were 10 empty pots - so if you're going to have only 2-3 soups of the day, don't list them all on the menu just mention Soup of the Day. Then only "show" what you have on a changeable wall menu. And $5 for soup? Well, OK, but I'd offer a cup size/price too.

Anyway, I liked the place and I'm sure we'll be back.

All new entities have opening month hiccups. It is only when the owner doesn't recognize these hiccups, or is simply unable to get them scared out, that they suffer empty tables day after day, night after night like some other places in town.

My freshman and his friends have given it good reviews! One nice gesture was that the owner let them use their football coupons to get shakes instead of the donuts, hot dogs, and popcorn specified. That kind of flexibility will keep the kids coming in!

Were they there last night....around 7:30?

Anyway, the place will do well. The place will start to gel. The place has pretty good coffee....in the opinion of someone who likes the scorched earth roast that SBUX makes. If they could seriously get rid of that playroom...which over time will become less-than-charming...the place will be a hit. But I understand why some people like children and would like to cater to them. But I'll warn you, in the long run, kids are just awful little things.

So agree, Clam - while my high school son gave the place raves, once I read the article in the DH about the playroom and the games and the whole "bring all the kids on over" vibe, I decided I'll give it a pass. I wish them well and I'm sure they'll do great with the rugrat crowd - it's not a bad thing to cater to a particular demographic, and that's a HUGE demographic, of course. But it's not MY demographic anymore. When I go out, I want it to be as kid-free as possible.

But on the bright side, I bet this will make Einstein much quieter at lunchtime!

Clam, what would you propose should become of the play room?

That sounds good Yoss, I would leave the bowling game and hoops a couple of drawing tables and the train table (for the cute little kids Clam hates) A sofa (leather) and a coffee table so you could sit and watch the little ones while chatting with friends and enjoying the yummy treats!
