Proud Hubby and I decided to dedicate ourselves to finding a good Mexican place tonight. (And by good we meant reasonably priced, margaritas from scratch, and definitely not Santa Fe which we do not like. Everything's soggy, the sauces are watery - overall, it's very uninspiring.)
We settled on a place called Yorbabuena in Lisle. Not bad. Good margaritas, a very extensive menu. I did find my chile relleno to be a tad soggy, which I dislike, but overall the sauces were just a bit more imaginative, and less watery, than Santa Fe. Still, we remain dissatisfied. We would definitely choose Yorbabuena over Santa Fe, Front Street Cantina, Uncle Julio's or that chain place in Wheaton, off of Butterfield, which I can never remember the name of. But still, it didn't reinvent the wheel for us.
Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Hacienda Cocula in Countryside. Its very authentic. I don't rate their margaritas high, but I love their tacos and burritos. Of course my hubby says you cant complain about a place where you can get Petron on the rocks for $6. Another good place is El Zarape in Wheaton.
Most Authentic Mexican restaurants that I know of and grew up with that are the genuine article, don't serve booze. I can't remember the name but I can picture the place/kitchen - it's in Bensenville, going towards O'Hare (Irving Park Rd.). If I think of it -I'll write it down
LaEstancia in Bloomingdale -is Okay! There's usually coupons in the local ads, again-probably commercial just the rest of them.
How I wish, how I wish you were here. We're just two lost souls Swimming in a fish bowl, Year after year, Running over the same old ground. What have we found? The same old fears. Wish you were here.
I'd voice my opinion (on local places), but my favorite restaurant in the whole world is a place with a portable grill and folding tables in an alley in Monterrey Mexico called Super Taco Pirata Ramiron. Piratas (tacos cost about $.75 each. This is not a place for people who need to see a health department certificate. I dream of these tacos
This is not an actual picture (the piratas look the same). Ramiron gets really mad every time I pull out my camera.

Ok, well if you are not looking for atmosphere AT ALL....and do not mind a drive...go to Mr. Taco in Cicero on the corner of Ogden and Austin.. Order the quesadillas or anything really. It is a hole in the wall to say the least, but AMAZING....And you will go back for more.

Yeah -it seemed lackluster.

Sorry, DTM . . . I thought you were being snarky. Truth be told, I have not been there in 14 years. Maybe it is good now. But my guess is that they are not serving anything remotely close to what's in that picture that perplexed posted.

Cozymel's - that's the place I was talking about, whose name I can never remember. Yeah, not exactly what Proud Hubby and I are looking for. Which isn't to say we don't eat there occasionally with the offspring.
La Hacienda in Addison is owned by the same guy that owns La Magdalena. It is much closer and has more space than Mags. I believe the food is just about the same at both places.
If you like differnt kinds of Mole and don't mind the drive to Arlington Heights, check out Salsa 17 at 17 W Campell. It used to be called Fuego-name change, but the food is still as good.
I've become fond of the vegetarian burrito bowl at Chipotle, changing it up from the meat dishes. It's a reliable fast food option when I don't want a burger; that's all I ever think of it anyway. I do like their chips and guacamole, though.
