Our oldest son turns 21 on Monday. He will be home to visit on Sunday for cake & presents, and has requested that we go somewhere at 11:58 so that he can have his first "official" drink at the stroke of midnight.
Does anyone know anywhere nearby that is open that late on a Sunday? That isn't really scary? Any help would be appreciated!
You look so young to have a 21 year-old. Wait. I've never met you.
I doubt that he will find anything open at that hour in DuPage County. Tell him that bars, for the most part, lose their charm once you become that age. 3/4 of the fun was being somewhere you shouldn't.

Well, if slumming over to Carol Stream is in order, I recommend Manhattans or even the Village Tavern, on Schmale Road near St. Charles.
Manhattans is on the western side of Schmale, right next to Aldis. Village Tavern - popular with the 20-something drinking crowd - is on the eastern side of Schmale, kiddie-corner from Manhattans.
Slumming is definitely in the plans! He's getting the full Chicago bar hopping experience on Monday & Thursday; his proud father is taking him to various bars on Rush Street on Monday (Yes, I know, we're such good parents!), and his uncle is coming to town on Thursday to do the same. So it's not like he has a lack of opportunities, especially since his starving artist-college student-studio apartment is right around the corner from Rush.
It's just tomorrow night, the first "official" drink, that's a problem out here in sleepy town. I'll call the establishments mentioned - thanks!
And thank you, JRB, and you're absolutely right. I do look far too young to have a 21-year-old!
FYI, if any one else finds themselves at midnight on a Sunday with a thirst that cannot be quenched, Roundhead's Pizza on Roosevelt, in Lombard (in the Hobby Lobby parking lot) is open until 1:00 AM for sure. Of the other places mentioned, only the Village Inn sometimes stays open that late on a Sunday; they said it depends on how busy it is.
Hey, I threw a "kegger" for my little girl last summer - right ON her 21st. Half-barrel of Miller and oodles of "packaged goods" in coolers. Tiki torches, beer pong, massive amounts of BBQ and all the trimmin's.
I ended up doing a few keg stands, so......
Oh, and I welcomed, encouraged, DEMANDED that anyone who felt they weren't up to getting behind the wheel? Flop on one of the half-dozen mattresses I had strewn about the old shack.
Or pull up a couch. Or the floor.
All did just that and when I woke up [about 4AM] to piddle, the place looked like the alligator exhibit at Brookfield Zoo - bodies all over! I had to step over several.
I tell ya, the girls are the worst. They FORCED me to keg stand.
We went to Roundhead's Pizza, where I had the pleasure of watching my son do shots with 3 very cute girl bartenders. What a proud moment that was.
Proud Hubby and I were musing, however, that neither of us can remember anything special about our 21st birthdays (and no, that's not because we were too drunk to remember). For me, the only unusual thing I recall was my little brother being nice to me for the first time ever, just so I would buy him and his buds some beer. Certainly, I did not have an entire week planned with relatives and friends eager to take me out and usher me into adulthood, like my son does.
Just one more example of how these darned kids these days have it too good!
Lol Scribbler! Glad things went well for him and you all had a good time!
BTN: You've got to be one of the coolest parents ever! My mom bought me a margarita with dinner at Friday's for my 21st....were it not for my friends, it wouldn't have been much different than any of the other ones, lol.
Should I give up, or should I just keep chasing pavements....even if it leads nowhere - Adele
