Golden Dragon is my favorite chinese place in the whole US of A. We think the General Tso's chicken is just OUTSTANDING. I don't understand why it isn't more highly rated among the chinese in this area? Can anyone enlighten me?

'Cause it sucks?

Sorry, sorry - couldn't resist. I'm also sorry if this is the best Chinese food you've ever had. Perhaps if a person hasn't had the chance to experience Chinese cuisine in the New York area, or San Francisco, this might suffice. But if your taste buds have been awakened to truly good Chinese food, then nothing in the Western suburbs will ever be palatable. I find all the Chinese food in the area to be bland, over-sauced and unimaginative. And mainly over-sauced. (Just had to say that twice.) Where are the wonderful cold sesame noodles? I have yet to find a place that has them.

Sigh. Now I'm all grumpy & unsatisfied.

Oh I agree-San Francisco was fantastic!

I'll eat Golden Wok II maybe once a year.
At work - maybe once or twice/year - Stone Dragon
It's very very slim pickin's out here for Chinese. In a nutshell - I would never go out to eat or take a dinner party to any chinese place in the Chicago metro area. I feel these places are okay for lunch only-and even that you feel like crap afterwards. I lean towards eating Japanese anyways.

I'll ask my co-worker where her favorites are - she's jewish.

Any place that has "general tso's chicken" is your first indication that the place is not authentic and geared towards americans. Like many of the fried and saucer dishes they were created for white folks. There is no General Tso chicken in Chinese food

I have a reputation of being so food snobby and mean . . . so I didn't point that out intentionally, glellyn. Thank you for helping keep me the most beloved person in town.

Jade Dragon in downtown Hinsdale. Owner likes to greet his repeat customers by name as they walk in. Worth the drive. Sit down and take out place. Simple decor. Decent prices. Order up a "dinner" on the left side of the menu for the best value.

Hey, this is my 1,000th post. Yipee!!!!

Sheesh! You guys are pretty tough!

So I've never been to China, but I sure like what I guess is the Chinese equivalent of Tex-Mex!

I think what everyone is getting at is this is not the area for Chinese. Just like Florida or other places ain't the place for Pizza!

Well . . . you did say it was your favorite Chinese joint in the whole US of A.

I think people either thought that you were kidding, or you have never left the midwest.

And people around here are downright mean. Or they were just trying to enlighten you as to why more Chinese don't eat there . . . or whatever you meant.

FWIW, there is no Golden Dragon to be found in local web searches or in the Yellow Pages. Where is this place?

Yeah, I can understand folk observing that what in served in most Chinese restaurants is not authentic, but that doesn't mean it can't be tasty.

I concur with Dins on this one....authentic or not, I like Americanized Chinese Food. Though I do agree with Scribbler about the over-sauced part....I often pick out the good stuff and leave the sauce in the containers, lol.

If you want a fresher Asian option, try Vietnamese.

Not sure if any of you have tried the new place that opened in downtown Naperville, Kumas Asian Bistro... It is super yummy! Two Thumbs up!
They have chinese, korean, and thai items on the menu. Plus, the service was fantastic.

I know this is is not a 100% chinese place, but they do offer some chinese dishes. Just went to this place last week and went back a few days later. Thought what we had was very good. the Lemon Beef appetizer, lemongrass skewer appetizer, beef in black bean sauce and papaya salad were very good.

Luong Loi is delightful. There's no atmosphere to speak of, but the food is delicious. The menu clearly shows which dishes are Vietnamese and which are Chinese...just look for VN on the menu. Try the Vietnamese shrimp salad from the appetizer section. The pho is great. Although it's a Chinese food, the hot and sour soup is pretty good, too. Have the plantain and coconut pudding (served warm) with a cup of Vietnamese coffee (a sort of a French press, strong cup with sweetened condensed milk) served hot or on ice, depending on your preference.

If you want more atmosphere and a different selection try Vietnam Bistro (also called Pho Pasteur). The clay pot catfish is good. The pho is better at Luong Loi. They've got bubble teas and a three-color bean dessert that is amazing (red beans, coconut milk, jello strips and shaved ice...forget how it sounds, it's AMAZING!) They've also got a good Vietnamese coffee.
