The Chef that is opening this restaurant is also opening up a restaurant in Chicago called Jackson Park Bar and Grill. I was able to sample items from their menu at last year's Wine Enthusiast gala at the Field Museum and the items offered were fantastic. Hopefully he will do diner food some justice.
The description of the decor in the diner sounds like 80% of the Portillo's opened in the last 10 years. I'm sure it will be a success, but why the gee-whiz 50's styling? I hate that ****. Diners need not be dumbed down.
However, Mr. Scribbler is a total sucker when it comes to any building designed to look like a retro diner. He doesn't care what the food is like, he just likes shiny buildings. So give the designer of this place credit, as there is a significant segment of the population just like Mr. Scribbler.
I’m with MR. Scribbler! I travel all the time and if I’m alone I’m drawn to shiny diners like a magnet (okay I know that magnets are not drawn to stainless steel… work with me!).
The only exception is my love of some regional cuisines like BBQ in Memphis & KC, seafood in the Gulf & Pacific Northwest, crawfish/shrimp etouffee in Louisiana and fish tacos in Southern California. (
