Hi Clam! Still here. Still lots to do, just in a wait mode as anything we try to push is met with "well, we are going through the downtown strategic plan right now" and/or met with a sneer and backside as she walks out of the room (no, not the EDC). I can't wait until April '09. Don't worry though- this is not a lay down and wait period, we are gearing up for lots of fun stuff to push. Just need to have our research done.

In other news, a piece of concrete fell off the building at 10,000 Villages right next to a customer walking in not too long ago.

I also heard that the Banyan Tree Mall is working with the Dir. of Planning & Devlpt on some plans. I'll have to follow up to see what the status is.

I actually like the one way streets downtown. I think it adds to our character. If we made the roads in to regular 2 ways, it would just be a faster way for people to leave or buzz through town. That is not a Go Downtown! view, just my own.

I'm off to try and finish our Find The Flag Passport. Going through the participating stores is very fun, except when they are closed even though their posted hours say they are open. Big wag of the finger to those businesses!

Anyone read the wonderful letter to the editor last week the the GE Sun about the 5 items that the study has come up with? If I could remember the name of the person that wrote that, I would give them a hardy "atta boy" on some wonderful comments.

I knew the owner in college. He lives in Lake Forest. East Lake Forest. I don't remember him as the kind of gent that will be hurrying down to fix it.

And everyone knows that a new train station and green space along the railroad tracks would attract the blue hairs here like they flock to Geneva. So that letter-writing dame doesn't know what she is talking about. Big Grin

If you actually mean the wonderful letter in the GE News, then plan to give an "atta girl." That letter writer has received a lot of very positive feedback from the masses who read that missive - articulate and very intelligent. Go and find it if you missed it. Smile

Why do you point this out on garbage day? My GE News is on a truck headed to become a paper plate in china.

I agree. And for those of you wondering, as my phone has been ringing with the question: No- Go Downtown! had nothing to do with that letter. I do not know who wrote it, but if you are the author and are reading this, THANK YOU!

I wish I had - - When I contacted her to praise her fab letter writing skills and tell her how on target her points were, she told me the News' editor called her to tell her how great it is to hear what readers think and wanted more input from the population. She said to "tell all you know to write in now and then." Hey - I just did. Smile

Now, someone has to still has to have that paper around - I did a quick search and couldn't find it online.

Please let me know if this Kosher or not - scanning and posting this: I did not write it.

Glen Ellyn consultants
must be kidding
I read with great disappointment your June 19 article regarding the five "pivotal points" that were brought forth from the consultants hired with taxpayer dollars to help rejuvenate our downtown. As a longtime resident of Glen Ellyn (15 years), I've followed this story with great interest because I am as eager as any to see our downtown revitalized from what is now a very poor excuse for a "downtown!'

In reading the article regarding what the consultants have put forth as "priorities:' my immediate response is nothing short of: Are you kidding me? Green space is listed as No.1. They've got to be kidding.
We're not looking for a park. We've got our share of those, and that is not the issue here. We're looking for a vibrant and economically viable retail business district as a destination for people to shop, spend their money and invest in this town.

The consultants also list an "unsightly train depot" also among the top five? Truly, you've got to be kidding! Of all the concerns I think our downtown has, the train depot building is the last thing I think we need to worry about.

I commute from that station every day into the city, and I have never thought the train station building is even remotely a problem for this town. No one spends more than five minutes a day in it, and no matter how much you beautify a train depot, it is not a destination in and of itself.

What is most alarming is that nowhere in the article is there mention of how to attract and retain viable businesses to downtown Glen Ellyn, and with each passing month, it seems we have yet more empty storefronts. That is what the consultants should be focusing on as Job 1!

Admittedly, they mention parking as a concern, and I agree that likely is one big deterrent for prospective retailers. That issue needs to be addressed.

But where is the discussion about economic incentives for businesses? What are they doing to look at diversifying our retail options so as to attract new businesses that will be able to make it in our town?
While I can see that some minor beautification efforts are in order, if that's the focus of the downtown revitalization plan, it's akin to trying to put lipstick on a pig. Without the right retailers and the right diversification of retail attractions, you'll never get people to come to downtown Glen Ellyn.

Give me stores that have items and services that we regularly need and that operate during hours that meet their customers' demands. Build the right retail environment first and foremost.

And if our highly compensated consultants are not taking that approach first and foremost, I suggest we send them out of that train depot that they seem to find so unsightly and find another team that will address the real issues first!

banyan tree mall still proudly displays the plaque it won for best architecture....IN 1980!!!! and it would be fair to say that they havent done a thing to it since then. it looks just like a bar in my college town. that and costello's plastic flowers...YUK.
i have mixed feelings about the 2 way main street...but it sure seems to be working for downtown downers grove...only thing is that we would then need a real traffic light, and there might be issues with that and the prairie path...hmmmmm

Lupe, my sentiments exactly. Was this some kind of bad joke (list of priorities)?

Seriously, no one wants to have green space by the tracks?! You're kidding? Thats the first place I would bring the little ones to play! Common kids! Lets go to the new park and get a fresh breath of diesel!

Anybody up for a good game of chicken with a locomotive?

Hopefully some of the Cook County business might find GE more attractive after that sales tax hike they were just hit with over there.

Did they mention some of the other suggestions from the work shop?

Art Gallery
Pedestrian Bridge/tunnel
Elevating Busy Bee to make access to parking east of main/south of Civic Center
Moving the Fire Station/build parking garage w/ retail on first level

Nothing cracks me up more than some idiot actually suggesting that retail and a volunteer fire department share the same building. Not much in the way of a liability issue, is there? You got your kid eating his or her Cold Stone cone...or a cone supplied by a viable treats purveyor unlike Cold Stone...dodging incoming firemen and outgoing firetrucks.

I hope whoever the Einstein was that came up with thatconcept avoids this springs Civic Betterment Party slating jamboree. Sounds like he or she could become our next village president.
