Like I told Yossarian, this is Glen Ellyn. Only white lights are permitted...not Blue...not light green...and certainly Peanut displays are not permitted.

We may be limiting ourselves to just lighting the front, the two blue spruces tress have outgrown the net lighting. Charlie Brown will be up within the hour.

Um, am I the only person who thinks this is precisely WHY the village chose blue? Perhaps because they wanted to be a little more inclusive at this time of year? Just a thought - we all don't go to St. Pet's, you know.

Or not. Maybe there wasn't any thought behind it other than the blue was on sale.

Don't care how you slice, dice or chop it, the blue and the yellow don't mix and it looks like $hit. They should have done everything to match or left it alone. Bah, humbug!

You'll enjoy meeting Baskin, Baily and Boomer. Our three Bouviers weigh between 65-100 pounds and are very fond of chasing interlopers. Big Grin

I thought the crowd was still pretty decent considering the temperature. Things certainly dispersed quickly once the tree was lit. I didn't notice the color of the lights - so I guess it wasn't a problem to me...I didn't cross the tracks to see the civic center though. Might have to check that out this evening.

We enjoyed the singing and went to Starbuck's for our preferred drinks. They moved their line very quickly - I was quite impressed. We did some real shopping downtown earlier in the day so during the Christmas Walk, I had no plans to buy anything. We walked around a bit and I have to admit I missed the wandering "characters" from last year with the funky lights and great costumes. Of course it was possibly 20 degrees warmer last year so I don't know that having the strolling characters would have kept me downtown much longer.

Came home and watched Santa Claus 2 with the family on a comfy couch with warm blankets. Perfect ending to a nice evening.

You should check out the Frank Gehry collection at Tiffany & Co, lots of Christmas gifts for Parker... a hint for all husbands, especially mine Big Grin

We had a great time at the Christmas Walk. That which is fun about the walk...Santa lighting the tree, seeing friends in a good mood, being welcomed by some of the retailers, the chili supper, a crowded downtown... still is great.

That which is wrong with the walk - entertainment closing up shop early or none at all accompanied by a $2.95 sound ampliication system, some grumpy retailers and an apparent lack of coordiinated efforts, is still there, too. There's nothing to do but get involved and fix it or just laugh and enjoy the event as it is. We decided to do the latter, despite events like a retailer on Main shouting botheredly (?) to an enthusiastic crowd in her store "Does anyone need some help or are you all just, just, just doing whatever it is you are doing?" Too funny...

One lucky little girl got to light the tree with Santa. Nice touch. Wonder how that honor is chosen? All in all, Glen Ellyn really shines two times a year...this walk and the 4th of July. Thumbs up.

Frank Gehry is one of my favorites. As a matter of fact, one of the drawings of the Walt Disney Center in LA is in my office. That said, Soldier Field is an abomination. But only because they dropped a terrific design inside the columns. Sort of like those clean blue lines on the antique which is the Village Hall.

Aren't LED lights much more expensive initially than regular lights? I will concede the greater efficiency in the long run. Just can't wait to see if they are stored properly, and the investment is protected. And can't you get them in different colors?

Why don't we all meet on December 4 at the Hannukah tree for the first night? Clam will give out gifts for all the kids.

I understand that they were trying to save the facade...but I think it would have been better to move it to an open area on the museum campus and restore them.

The tree looks OK to me. Not offensive, IMO. The location, though it seems like a natural spot, is fairly absurd, (again) IMO. Accesible only by car, only feet away from one of the busiest rail lines in Chicago. One has to wonder why that is such a great locale. Personally, I'd gladly cover up Baron Wark's Floral Clock every November and December. That location would allow kiddies the opportunity to get an up close look at that thing...and figure out what kind of lights are on it. Vicky had better hope that I am never elected President...or she'll see her $520,000 tree (how much was it again?) across the street from Soukup's...and the horse trough permanently grounded where it should be.

Clam, did you just throw your hat in the ring? I will definitely support you.

I am fairly certain that given a cape and a nice tiara, I could save the world.

Last night was my first trip downtown, post Christmas Walk. Observations:

I didn't mind the lights on the Civic Center. At least it's a pretty blue.

The lights on the Christmas Tree are not blue or green; upon very close examination (i.e., walking over to the tree and sticking my head among the branches), they're white. Pure, pure white - it's the green of the tree that makes it look bluish green from afar. The problem with this is that the lights on all the other trees are not pure, pure white - they're the typical golden white lights. I don't think the tree necessarily looks bad; I think it's a pretty tree, and the ornaments are great. Personally I would have gone for either green and red, or multi-colored lights, for a greater contrast with the other trees.

And the Floral Clock time was wrong - again. Or - still.

But overall, it looks pretty, as usual. Went to Tap House Grill and Vittorio's for a drink after, and both places looked hoppin'.

Big thumbs up on the tree this year. Someone made a good decision, and I thought the ornaments, etc. were nice, too.

My seven year old tried to ruin it for me, however, when she explained that the dust that Santa dropped didn't actually light the tree - it was someone with a light switch somewhere. She also explained to my 5 year old that that wasn't the real Santa, because the real Santa is too busy this time of year to come here. The 5 year old didn't buy it - he knew he was the real deal. Priceless stuff in Quaintville, USA. This kind of thing is the reason why we moved here. The only thing missing was Uncle Billy barging in with a basket of cash and Clarence getting his wings.

Following the tree lighting, we booked over for some grub at the Glen Oak and then over to the Library. Thumbs up again to the Library for another good event. You really can't get enough of the bouncing Madrigals.

From my viewing point (about 10 feet away), I saw the colors as white with slight bluish tint, as opposed to the Main St. trees which are white with a yellow tint. I thought it looked fine. They're certainly not as blue as the Civic Center lights, by any stretch. I keep hearing that "they" are "this close" from a true white LED, but they never seem to get there. Oh well.

I liked the tree. I hate the snowflake ornaments as they look super fromagey...but other than that...OK. Not that great an achievement. Straight out of a catalog if I had to guess. But not offensive like Fan seems to feel. I've never been able to figure that kid out.

Would look really nice on top of the malfunctioning floral clock. If it's possible to go to Hell for creating that advertisement-laden eyesore...someone is going there.

Offensive - poor word. I am not offended...in fact, as usual, the Village looks better than 99% of all other Municipalities in Illinois....but the blue lights...and light green lights....argh....it's just not fitting....kind of like having a Peanut's display up.

I thought you were taking care of the Peanuts thing. BTW...never been a fan of the strip. Is it "Peanuts" plural, or "Peanut's" possessive? I suppose I could have just looked it up and saved the time typing this.

Schulz died, didn't he? Like a long time ago, IIRC.
