My nephew is coming in this week end to tour Northwestern. They want him to golf. Now why you would leave Arizona and come here, I don't know. I think part of it is the experience or to savor in the courting. Personally, I would stick with AZ/CA areas.

Any way, we're meeting for dinner in Evanston. Any suggestions?

About a year ago, this place was really good:

Pete Miller's Seafood & Prime Steak
1557 Sherman Ave
Evanston, IL 60201
Phone: (847) 328-0399

www.petemillers.com

They have/had a basil-marinated Ribeye that is really outstanding. Nice atmosphere. Reminded me of Wildfire.

Pete Miller's was always a good standby when we lived there, but I never considered it even close to being competition for what you get in the city. You want steak...drive 20 minutes south. If you drive into da big city...which you should...go to Keefer's or David Burke's Primehouse.

Go to Koi if you stay in Evanston. Two blocks south of campus on Davis.

Northwestern has the best facilities in the country and has access to the best courses in the country. I'm sure he'll be told this, but he should never underestimate the benefit of having a three month break during the winter.

And, Luke Donald thought that Northwestern was a pretty good place to play golf...and he's pretty good.

Re: dinner...not sure...but you have to go to Buffalo Joe's for lunch.

I think you should change your BB name to Zagat's.

Lived there for a long time.

Did I mention that we went to Honey on Saturday, Yoss? Something you have yet to do, IIRC.

Yoss, you bring up some good points. He has been golfing and competing almost every day for the last five years. One of the reasons he is looking at NW is to gain experience competing in a different climate. I believe the rest of the offers are from Stanford, USC and other Ca schools.

I have concerns that he is still able to balance the academics with the golf. He gets good grades but really needs to work at it. He may have a shot at going pro but after that he needs to work at something.

Advantages to NW, his dad is an alum, lots of family here to support him. He has not been around snow since he was 9. Not sure how he'll last with the cold and snow. I think what it will come down to what program does he feel the most comfortable in. I'm just glad to see he has a lot of choices.

I recall you told me of some of your Evanston adventures when we had drinks at THG.

I must correct you-I have been to Honey on numerous occasions, I've just never sat down and had a meal. Perhaps this weekend, if Mrs. Yoss is up for it.

Best review to date. Short, succinct and to the point. The reader is not left questioning your thoughts or feelings.

If your nephew finds Northwestern too intense (and let me tell you, those are some intense kids), he might want to check out the golf programs at some of the other Big 10's. Purdue, U of I (I know GE Fan will endorse this one), and Iowa , I've heard are good programs. I have also heard very good things about Marquette's golf program.

Hope your nephew enjoys his visit. Too bad the weather is still so cold. I'm not familiar with restaurants in Evanston but I do love the town.

Part of the reason for making the visit now is the weather. They want him to see what it will really be like.

Sunny and a high of 20 forecast for Saturday. That's pretty realistic for March. The wind off of the lake is pretty nippy this time of year. Partly cloudy and a balmy 36 on Sunday. Smile

If given the choice between Stanford and anything else....I would have a very difficult time endorsing anything but Stanford.

I always said there are 6 schools that if you get into - you go to. No questions asked...you find a way to go and you enroll.

1. Harvard
2. Yale
3. Stanford
4. Princeton
5. Dartmouth
6. Duke

I'd love to hear your reasoning behind this philosophy. I don't necessarily agree with you...though I'm open to hearing your argument counsellor.

I don't have a wonderfully creative argument. I probably don't even have a persuasive one.

What I do know, through observations and real world experience, is that those 6 degrees travel all over the country. Those six degrees (Duke may be my only stretch and can be replaced with MIT) are the most universally revered degrees all over the country. Those six universities are the most selective, admitting the best and brightest across the country, each year. Graduates from those six universities have sat in classes and competed against the best and brightest for 4 years (or more). Degrees from those six universities go a long way to help its graduates gain admission to medical schools, law schools, business schools and other graduate schools. Those six universities have rabid, cultish, alumni associations who take care of their own. Degrees from those six universities can get you in ANY door. (Unless a Harvard grad is applying to work at a Yale hedge fund).

The fact of the matter, from top to bottom, from coast to coast, those schools are the most universally known as being institutes of the highest learning. They are known to be the best of the best...and perception counts for a lot.

That's my reason.

Maybe I'll even extend my list to include the following:
1. Penn
2. MIT
3. Northwestern
4. University of Chicago
