If you are talking about the Starbucks, I know there is nervousness about the viablity of the CBD location. Especially since the drive through on Roosevelt opened. Didn't think they were closing, but wouldn't be surprised.

The Starbucks has been there since 1995. My guess is that they are absolutely not hurting for business. Just ask the competing coffee house down the block.

I find this whole CBD pretty incredible and our village "leaders" are only beginning to look at the problem. Consider that what TBS is doing is just a study which could end up in the same pile in the corner as the 10 year plan. Candidate-You have your work cut out for you. I hope you are able to field another independent candidate for the 2009 election. This decaying downtown is really sad. Our village president should be ashamed.

A bad mayor can have a large influence on a city within a very short amount of time. When a city population bands together, it can recall a mayor who is found to be corrupt, incompetent or unfit to lead. The trend of recalling wayward mayors in the US has been steady since the 1950s. If you are looking to recall your city mayor, follow these steps to get started.

Step 1:
Find out about laws and regulations that govern recall in your city. The regulations related to mayoral recall procedures and regulations differ from city to city. You can find the details about how to proceed with a mayoral recall in your city's municipal code, which is available through most city agencies and public law libraries.

Step 2:
Start a movement. The only real chance you'll have at recalling a mayor is by getting a group of dedicated and determined people together to battle for the recall. Most recall and recall attempts begin with at least a few politicians who oppose the mayor. However, you can keep the movement apolitical by involving local social and community leaders instead of politicians.

Step 3:
Collect signatures for a petition. Each city has different requirements for the number of signatures needed to recall a mayor. Find out the number of signatures and the requirements related to signature authenticity and start a well organized signature drive to validate the petition. Make sure that each signature is authentic before you submit your petition to the city council.

Step 4:
Use the media to help. Local media is generally very hungry for politically interesting stories, such as mayoral recalls. Get your local media involved so you can spread the message about the recall and enlist others to help with the cause. Also, gaining media favor on the recall issue will help place pressure on city council members to approve the recall of the mayor.

I think there are "Glen Ellyn Standards" and "Starbucks Standards" for what hurting for business constitutes. In Glen Ellyn, seeing a warm body in a Starbucks (besides the homeless) is deemed a success. Not so much for Regional Management.

Kidding aside, I was told that there was a meeting about the loss of customers and how they are not making the business they were two years ago.

OK, OK, I agree things look dire downtown, but...

I only went to Coldstone once. Why? Because we already had a Dairy Queen and an Oberweis. I'm an Oberweis girl and I never "got" Coldstone's concept of ice cream. Too much thought and effort involved. I just want to go to Oberweis and order what's on the board, you know? So...I'd venture to say that was never the smartest move, to bring another ice cream franchise into town.

Yes, the CBD needs fixing but I think only part of it can be blamed on the cleanliness/vagrant issue. I think that most of the places that open here are just really questionable business decisions, or poorly-thought out concept stores that are underfunded. (And so - wouldn't stand a chance wherever they landed.)

As for other establishments, well...I finally found a use for Honey. (I have not been impressed the two times I went there to dine. Plus I hate the interior.) But I met an out-of-town friend at the train station today (she's in the area visiting family), and we wanted a quiet place to talk and have a coffee. And Honey did fit the bill, much better than Starbucks or Einstein. However, it was also empty except for one other table. I don't know if that's to be expected at 3:00 in the afternoon or what. But I can say I recommend the place for a coffee and a cupcake with a friend.

I heard a rumor that Good Works might be going..I'd really hate that. I think I've spent more at that store than any other, except maybe the Bookstore. I probably only went in three-four times a year but whenever I needed a special gift, that's been my go-to place. That will make me sad, if they go.

BTW - I also couldn't help but notice, as I was walking with my visiting friend through our quaint downtown, all the overflowing trash cans. At least we weren't panhandled, though. I am grateful for that.

Yes! I want to bring my small children to our CBD.

All Starbucks seem to have plummeted. Out of nowhere. You can walk in and out of those places in no time flat nowadays...versus how long it took a few years back. Talking mostly about the ones in the city. I go there once a day...drop my two bucks and rarely look back.

I'm years ahead of you on this one, scribbler. Glad to see that I am not alone in my observations. There is only one year left in Vicky Hase's term, but I think it would be a symbolic step in the right direction if she stepped down. Use the "to spend more time with my family" line if she must, but she is destructive dead wood (no pun intended about the trees she will most likely vote to destroy...her votes always seem to be cast in the most spiteful way possible). As far as I know, she has no full-time employment. How she couldn't have been pushing and working for a new village manager is mind-boggling and baffling.

Its not the first Ice Cream Store to go under in town. The first was Yankee Doodle on Crescent. The second that I can remember was on Main Street where Glen Ellyn Camera was (on the west side of main) The third was the popcorn shoppe and Cold Stone is the forth.

If anybody has any good ideas for a CBD business, throw your hat in the ring and give it a try. Bet you could get a great deal on your lease!

Downtown Elmhurst has a public works crew out every morning by 7:00AM emptying trash and picking up any garbage that didn't make it into the cans. The Elmhurst City Centre also employs a full time maintenance person who can be seen daily cleaning up the area. A clean CBD is a big part of it's success in keeping it vibrant.

I want to go on record to say that...other than snow removal...I have not seen ONE employee of public works in Glen Ellyn since I don't know when. It's a pretty small ****ing space...they should have someone looking after it every day...or every other day. No excuse not to.

couldn't stand coldstone...i HATE getting ripped off. i once paid 1.80 for a TABLESPOON of ice cream for my youngest. as for shopping in GE: in the last year we've gotten our hair cut here, bought gifts at ali kat, balloons once, starbucks a few times, honey x2, a few things at camp, various restaurants, and lots of barones and mcchesneys. we bought no clothing here, and 3 pairs of shoes. and we drive to where we're going mostly, and seem to avoid panhandlers.
you could argue that the cbd reflects the economy, but ali kat's success (i'm assuming they are successful) shows that this is a pretty affluent town, and if the service/product is available and fairly priced businesses can succeed.

I think a good Hot Dog place with fresh cut fries might do well there, something like Jack Straws with sit down areas. I would also serve soft serve ice cream and shakes. I only visited CS twice, just wasn't into the concept or price.
