Mrs'58 will no longer walk around downtown GE alone daytime or otherwise. The bums rule the streets while our village president remains mum or deaf on the subject - as does the entire police department.

Might as well make the CBD a huge PADS party center 24/7 instead of trying to get shoppers down there. It has devolved to the point where that's what it is or where's it's headed. And it's only now getting warm - the homeless population will be growing more every day.

Think we can hire Chuck Norris? I'll bet he'd get the job done.

MP, Candidate or anyone else:

What ordinances cover how many people may stay overnight in a single space? Is it a local ordinance, state ordinance, both? Who is in charge at our village to ensure compliance? Fire inspector?

Very nice...and bum-free. Although with 5 girls under the age of 4 running around, my ears feel like they went and saw The Who. How do they get the pitch so high?

I will defer to Candidate (who just finished Reid's 10K Ride in fine style!) as his research is probably more current, but I do not believe there are any ordinances restricting the number of overnight guests on private property in Glen Ellyn or Illinois.

Sorry your ears are still ringing, Ruydah. It seems that pre-school pitch (FYI - not limited to girls) can scare even the most hardy dogs as well. Glad the gig went well...but are you certain it was bum-free? Smile

Be grateful someone is going downtown and keeping our CBD from fully going under...

Was the downtown area near Starbucks and down Main to Pennsylvania looking clean still this morning? Or did all the debris/dirt/cigarette butts blow back onto the sidewalks? It looked great when we left yesterday morning....

I wasn't sure whether to post this here or in one of the threads discussing re-development of the business district - but I think I have hit upon the solution of a couple of our town's problems - how to turn PADS into an advantage for all.

Think of it! San Juan Capistrano has its swallows.

Hinckley Ohio has its buzzards.

Why shouldn't Glen Ellyn reap the benefits of its recurring Gathering of the Bums?

Just think of the possibilities! People could gather downtown in the early evenings on Sundays and Thursdays, anxiously scanning the horizon, eager to be the first to sight an approaching bum. We could host a kids' dress-up contest. Print up tee-shirts. Maybe one of our more creative types could pen a song. When the homeless, come back, to Glen Ellyn...

Stores would want to stay open late to serve the crowds. Sidewalk cafes would be packed.

Man, I oughta get a $100K contract for ideas like this!

Dinsdale - While not quite the same as your plan, Boone, Iowa has hosted a Hobo Convention since 1900. It has been quite a boon to the economy there. Wink

I'm sure Einsteins is raking it in with this strategy. 4 tables outside.....4 cups of coffee sold at $1.25....AND they turn those tables over every 3 hours or so. Can't miss with that one. They should be thanking PADS for all the biz being thrown their way.

Get this-While some of us were cleaning the CBD sidewalks yesterday morning, 50 cent comes by and plops down on the bench by Starbucks. When we get to his bench, rather than move, he justs lifts his feet. During our activities, I run into SBUX for a break and sure enough Tony asks me for 50 cents, this is only 20 minutes removed from when we came by to clean up his area.

I'm not condoning his panhandling, but I think this behavior of asking for 50 cent by Tony is almost an unconscious reflex action. He does seem to have deduced that anyone going into SBUX, has some discretionary income, so I can't fault the logic in his selection of his panhadling location. I'm also curious-Why 50 cents? Why not ask for a dollar? Doesn't he adjust for inflation?

Does anyone know if the water bowl in front of Tap House is intended to slake the thirst of our four-legged friends, or as a footbath/bidet for our biweekly guests?

If they didn't blow back, the bums will bring a new supply thursday. Smile

I saw the same program. They said hobos are hitching rides on trains looking for work, the bums aren't or did the hobos evolve into the bums.

Anyhow, the bum convention is a great idea. We should give a cash prize to the first bum that leaves when pads closes.
