GEM, I'm glad you had enough balls to call the PD. Good for you! Be patient though, give it a few more months or maybe a few more years and the homeless will get their act together. I mean afterall, PADS plan is to cure homelessness in DuPage within 10 years, this means we have only about 8 more left. Also, don't forget, PADS has been talked to and I am sure they had discussions with their clients informing them of our concerns like they said they would. They really want to be good neighbors, don't you know? Candidate, are we still on for May? Hase needs to be present.

When a dog $hits on your carpet, rubbing its nose in it seems to help. GEM (and all the rest of you)-- next time video tape all that you see, I'll pay to have it professionally edited and we'll play it a public board meeting. It really bothers me that we see all of this stuff, but the people we elect to represent us and pay their salaries don't. Total joke! And what pisses me off even more is that a few us, on Sunday, took time away from our families to clean the CBD inclduding picking up hundreds if not thousands of butts.

Way to go Buggy! I plan on doing the same thing. I am not going to stand for the "we didn't know or we never saw that" excuse. Does Hase even live in GE? If so, for how long?

Today two regular bums were sitting under my awing, puffing away and tossing the butts on the ground.
I called Glen Ellyn's finest.
12 Minute response time. (not bad, this time they showed up)
Officer pulls up, gets out, approaches bum #1 (the Einsteins lady bum)
Officer: You smokin? did you throw your butts on the ground?
Bum#1: Nope, Nope, not mine.
Officer, gets in car and leaves.
As officer is leaving, Bum#2 (the big guy who was sleeping in the library photo) Is walking straight down the middle of Main Street against traffic, yelling at motorists and banging on passenger windows as they pass.
The bum sees the police officer and starts yelling and gesturing at him while he drives away. Apparently the officer did not observe this event unfolding before his very eyes as he drove past Bum#2.
As this is happening, A woman (shopper unloading children while parked in front of Giggles N' Gaggles) promptly puts her daughters back into the car and hastily drove away.
Can't say I blame her for packing up.
Thank you PADS!
Good Job GEPD!
I have an entire box of used eyeglasses I would like to donate to the GEPD! (except for Tom S. and Paul B. You rookies can learn allot form them so pay attention!)
If this is even 50% accurate, I'd look into having Chief Norton explain what happened and why it happened. He is very approachable, just not by me...or Fish...or Fan. Candidate and/or 4MP...would you be so kind as to copy and paste this account and send it to Phil (it is my understanding that he does not read these message boards). Ask him, if you would, what the procedure is in a circumstance where people are loitering and littering and why, if this officer witnessed both, that he would leave a business owner to fend for him or herself after they called the police to register a complaint. As I said, if this is the slightest bit accurate, this stuff is getting out of hand...even for me...and I have a lot of patience.

He does have a lot of patience. He's been complaining about the very issues that are being talked about today in Glen Ellyn 5 years ago....before it was in vogue. Over the past 5 years, he's done nothing about these issues but complain about them as he was waiting for them to sort themselves out. Now I call that patience!

This my friend is 100% accurate. I could understand him not doing anything about Bum#1 b/c by the time he arrived, she was just sitting on the bench. Bum#2 . . . There is no excuse. He saw it, he heard it, yet chose to drive away. BTW Bum#2 is scary, Very Scary. In my opinion his behavior was threatening and inappropriate there is not doubt we will hear about this guy again.

Yes. We will need to decide on a date soon though. May 4th might be too soon and May 11th is Mothers Day how does May 18 look for everyone. I will look into a coffee sponsor. The papers want a heads up this time. This will surely help with participation.
Hase needs to be present.
I would be happy to ask but I can't promise anything.

I would be happy to forward the account to the PD to have them look into it. Can you or GEM e-mail me a contact name for them to verify the incident. Coincidentally I met with Chief Norton today and passed on several residents compliments to him for the PD stepping up foot patrol efforts in the CBD. We all have to be vigilant about dialing 911 when any disturbing incidents like this take place. Officers cannot initiate a complaint for things like disorderly conduct. We need to make the call.

I would just prefer that you made them aware of it. Also make them aware that citizens do observe their job performance. Perhaps then the police would be a bit more thorough on calls like this. On a side note, while still on the topic of duty and performance, I noticed an officer (Sunday afternoon) chatting and laughing on a cell phone while sitting in his cruiser that was tucked up in a service entrance on the back side of The Links. When returning from my errand (approx 25 minutes later) that same officer was in that same spot doing the exact same thing. I wasn't aware that police work involved telemarketing or that the GEPD now uses cellphones.

I was in the downtown last evening at about 5:45. Thursday night, the night that most of the shops are open late. I saw 6 homeless folk, 4 sitting in front of open shops, waiting for the PADS to open. I guess Thursday night is a PADS night in GE? The person I was talking to says this is a weekly occurence and that stores only lose money during Thursday night because nobody will go into shops with homeless camped out in front of them. Shouldn't the downtown be open late on another night that PADS is in town, say Friday, or should PADS change nights to give the downtown businesses a break? Just wonderin...

Remember this....a wise man said it a while back: "All of these poor MFers trying to make a living by peddling their wares in GE's CBD, doing what they can to survive, including the no-longer-spoken-about "core hours." Nobody but nobody in the village offices, the COC, the EDC, the DBA could possibly have foreseen the irony of keeping stores open until 8PM on Thursday nights (or could they?) . . . the very night that all savvy Glen Ellynites avoid traveling to downtown Glen Ellyn because of our friends that infiltrate that very area. Couldn't have written a diviner comedy if one tried." A very wise man.

It's Friday, which means it's Bum-A Rama 2. The CBD was filled with every kind and Einsteins had it's fair share. I ran into Mrs. Bitter who was going to dine in the minivan, wise choice. I thought PADS provide these folks with showers? PADS volunteers-Please tell our visitors that if they're going to hang out in Einsteins or SBUX, to please take a shower.

A very good friend just IM'd me this message: "the bums are really bumming me out....working from home today so XXXXX and i took the kiddies in the stroller to sbux and einsteins. She was waiting in the seats outside for me to get drinks and i come out..she's halfway down to main...some XXXXX dude going up to everyone asking for money....this town couldn;t look any worse with all the vermin...they..are...everywhere." This is coming from everyone. These comments sent to me out of the blue. This town better get ready for a really interesting summer. My guess is that sooner or later the retailers are going to rise up and do something. As I was typing this another friend called and said there was a passel of people that probably didn't live full-time in this town lounging about on the front stoop of Linea during business hours. What the f@ck? They really do have run of the place. What happened to the good old days when rabblerousers used to hang in the woods by Perry's Pond or near Salt Creek? If I owned a business downtown...and you folks know who you are...I would get Phil Norton on the phone and demand a meeting. Perhaps you could coax President Hase to come back from Alabama and throw her two cents in. This just in, Glen Ellyn, IL village president Vicky Hase announces a new sister city relationship with Berkeley, CA.
