I'm envisioning someone like this...

Does Hinsdale have a river?

Yoss, your humor is the best! Will this work as a river?

Salt Creek

I am fairly certain that given a cape and a nice tiara, I could save the world.

I really don't want to be a buzz kill over the humor you all are finding over this. And in some ways, I get the humor but I'm having a bit of an issue with dwelling on this fat thing....a key issue in battling body image issues with adolescents is this idea that being fat means a person is bad. Admittedly, the person in perplexed's photo is unusually large. But, girls who are not "thin" (and boys to a greater extent these days too) develop very negative feelings about their bodies very early on - even while they are still young and growing (a common growth pattern in kids is gain weight, then shoot up) - because of these kinds of potshots and the effect snowballs. Can we try to avoid using fat as a characterization for a person who has simply demonstrated ignorance and arrogance. I know plenty of arrogant and ignorant thin people!

Amy-

I have an acquaintance who battled with her weight her entire life. She was never fat or even heavy in any sense of the term, but her mother reminded her daily that she wasn't thin. Well jump ahead 15 years and she's just had her first baby. It has amazed me how tiny her 6 month old is until I saw her underfeeding her infant. She is seriously terrified of having a "fat baby"!!

Babies need fat - as part of their diet, omega 6 and omega 3 - to make their brains develop - this is dangerous!!!

Fats make up 60% of the brain and the nerves that run every system in the body.

Did anyone see the special yesterday on Runaways on MSMBC? It talked about these people spending their time during the day in libraries at one point.

Hi,

I was given a good old bi&ch-slappin one day not long ago that helped reshape some of my opinions on body image. While participating in a triathlon I noticed some heavier looking women standing around getting ready to start the race. I'll admit to initially thinking they seemed too heavy to be racing and of course I assume they might never finish.

HA! Good thing I kept my mouth shut and my thoughts to myself. Sometime during the bike segment, they streamed past me and all I saw of them during the run was a brief glimpse of the back of their shirts since I never caught up with them. You just never know what's under the hood, do you?

You guys are soo bad for making fun in this way. You think you could learn your lesson from all of the mistakes I have made posting. Shame, Shame. . . .Shame. Big Grin

I'm taking sides with Amy on this issue. It would probably be o.k. if you called the Hinsdale guy stupid. Smile

I participated in the Galena Triathlon a while back and was disheartened to see my training and mental state go down the drain when 65 year old women and 44 year old heavy set people streamed past me. Even had a rather heavy set, albeit younger girl from WI, run with me the last 2 miles telling me how she dreamed of eating cheese when this was over. She beat me by 100 yards or so. Finished respectably, so you never can tell.

Good call, Amy. Fat = Lazy/Stupid/Disgusting is so ubiquitous in our culture, I didn't even think twice about the usage in those posts. And I have nothing against fat people. I'd have to hate the majority of my family!

I also think that the healthy-eating by decree movement is driven in part by the rampant lipophobes in this country.

To twist a phrase: keep the government out of my kitchen.

I did get a voicemail yesterday from a PADS volunteer at 1st Congregational who said my name had been passed along to PADS management for a call-back regarding my neighbors' and my concerns in an effort to find some mutually acceptable solution. This volunteer said I should expect a call today or tomorrow. The volunteer did acknowledge my initial call was made a few weeks ago. But, at least someone finally called back.
