Clutching our $20 food voucher for donating to a local school fund drive, my bride and I strode into the Tap House for dinner and drinks this evening.

"Two, Please" we said to the seating goddess.

"All of our two person tables are full, but you can squeeze in at the bar if you want."

Peeking into the back room and spotting a few empty tables sporting more than two buttholders, "can you seat us at one of those tables?"

"No, we are too busy."

"Goodbye" we said and had a great meal at Figo's.

==================================

Pretty poopy service...saving the four-tops for better utilization. Penny wise and pound foolish since the voucher is now in the hands of our teenager who will invite 17 friends to go with him to spend the 20 bucks and not a penny more.

Not to mention the high markup booze that we would have pounded down in true holiday spirit.

The Tap House wins a solid "Bah Humbug" this evening.

Next time keep the voucher in your pocket so that they can't see it until after your meal comes.

Scribbler...are you aware that you husband refers to Figo as the possessive Figo's? He must be from the Southside...."I am going to the Jewels." Big Grin

THG has been handcuffed from day one by lousy employees...with the exception of the very capable and friendly bald waiter...and the wife of the owner. Otherwise...it's a crap shoot. Good place to drink. I'll give them that.

Actually I had accidently left the voucher in the car so we did not look like deadbeats. That's a common smooth move for me to do, so the Tap House would have not have had to redeem it tonight since I would not run out to get it in the cold Smile

Also, there was no line of folks waiting for a table so we were next in line. There was simply not enough of us to seat.

Is the owner of THG working there now, or is he still hanging around Bells & Whistles? I believe he was there every day the first week it opened.

Get some friends! Cool

BTW, they obviously are not literary types at THG...or they would have noticed who you were attempting to dine with and procuring a table would have not been an issue.

He does often refer to "the Jewels," but he usually means something else entirely...

I apologize. I was just chastised for not proofreading his post - like that's my job or something? Nope. But I will concur; the hostess was ridiculously clueless and rude, so we voted with our feet and spent our money elsewhere - at Figo. (Note the proper punctuation.)

On a different tangent - is anybody using the valet parking? There were several perfectly convenient spots within easy walking distance, so we didn't. I can't decide if the valet parking is a good idea or not - we've never had a problem finding good parking at night.

PH-THG does a lot to support the business community, so please give them another chance. I agree with Clam assessment some of the folks that work there don't understand the concept of the customer. When we've stopped by "just for drinks" they try to seat us all the way in the back or "kiddie land " as I refer to it. I simply said "No" and told the host where I wanted to sit. I wouldn't hesitate to ask for one of the mangers, they are both very responsive to their customers.

Definitely give THG another change. We are regulars there now - nearly once a week. We love to go on Sundays after church because if the Bears are playing, my son can watch the game while we all eat together. I agree that some of the wait staff are less capable than others...some are actually decent at the "waiting" part - bringing the food, checking in with you, but not so good at anything beyond that.

I back what Amy says....other than this. Because I am not certain what she means.

Good drinking place, especially if Fan is paying, but I have found the food heavily relies on the fryers...even the salads. So...tiptoe thru the menu and you should be OK.

I woke up still miffed, but will try the Tap House for some drinks soon...bottles of beer are fairly hard to goof up and if Clam has Fan buying us all drinks, all the better!

On another related note, I didn't realize I missed the Firkin until I had a 3 hour delay at Dulles recently...was wandering around the terminal looking for dinner and they have a Firkin and Fox. Ahhhh...glam travel, baby!

O.k, lets see how far back you can remember! The playroom at Bells and Whistles. . . . What stores can you remember occupying that space? Anyone remember the sports store???

My time in GE only dates back to Creative Gift...didn't it take up the Tap House and space south to Craig's? It was big and wrapped around inside. I don't know what was there before Creative Gift, though my husband might. I remember May Ling being either where Santa Fe is now or where Shannon's is now...one or the other. My husband refers to Tiffany's all the time - now Figo. He has mentioned a sports store but he's not home to ask now. He had lots of fun memories and Glen Ellyn Card and Gift which became "The Hallmark Store" and now has morphed into several different stores....He also mentioned the old pretzel shop which was either where Camp is now or somewhere close to that. I'd love a little pretzel shop again!

Wasn't the short term sports store called Victory?

What was the name of the restaurant where Figo is now - before it was Glen Ellyn Brewery? When we first moved here it was some kind of family eatery, but I can't remember the name.

I remember there was a natural-fiber women's clothing store near where Starbucks is - I think in that florist store - for a while. Also, that country home furnishings place, where the coffee/juice place is now. And Alexander's, next to the bakery. Daffy Down Dilly, of course, on the corner. Also, where the playroom for Bells and Whistles is used to be a deli, right - before it was Fromage and Company? An Italian deli, if I remember - I loved their sandwiches.

When we moved here 19 years ago, the Figo space was occupied by the Main Street Cafe, sort of a Glen Oakie kind of place. Then for a really short time there was something else that attempted to be a family friendly restaurant...for some reason the name Serendipity or something similar is coming to mind? I remember bringing my then 3 or 4 year old son in there and them serving him a 20 ounce glass of milk because they didn't own any smaller glasses. There were a lot of similar glitches and as I mentioned, I don't remember them lasting long.
