I haven't been there yet. Has anyone tried it out? For years, my sister has raved about their prices on name brand lunch fixings (like those packs of single serve chips, pudding, etc) and swears by their bread. My husband is of the mindset that they will only have Flito Lay and Spiffy peanut butter, not the regular brands, but that's not what my sister says. I keep meaning to go, but just haven't made it over there yet (although I managed to get to DQ on Saturday, so I guess I'm just lazy LOL).

I haven't been but I read a press release about the store, and I gathered that they do only carry their own brands of popular grocery items. So you won't find Nabisco and Frito-Lay and Heinz, etc., etc....but that, of course, doesn't mean that the quality of their brand isn't just as good.

You guys know that Aldi owns Trader Joe's right?

It's set up as the same concept. Just larger scale grocery, rather than "gourmet" specialty store.

I didn't know that and now I'm ashamed of myself. I don't blink twice at buying Trader Joe's private label goods, but I was squeamish about buying Aldi's private label. Actually, until this morning (I checked the website) I didn't realize it was a "private label" situation. I thought it was just lower end stuff. I think I'll pick some things up over the weekend and see how it goes.

How dare you classify Fritos as lower end stuff. Put those things on chili with a little cheese and sour cream....and you're in for some high end ****.

How's Nutrisystem going for ya Fan? Wink

Been to the new Aldi. I was one of the few in town that seemed excited about it opening in GE. I'm quite certain a good deal of the items at Aldi are the same that you'd buy at TJ's, just a different label.

We have always used Aldi in the summer when we have to buy a bunch of stuff for the Michigan house...it does save some major change. Oh, and remember they don't take credit cards...only cash or debit cards...for a long time, it was only cash.

Not Fritos -- Flitos. Like on the Simpson's when they shop for a new TV at the outlet mall - "Look, here's a genuine Sorny, and here's a Magnetbox . . ."

I love Fritos. Mmmmm...salty snacks....

I love love love Aldi's and this new GE store is very nice.
Buying the basics there can't be beat price wise. And they do honor the if you don't like it bring it back policy. I have had a few things I didn't like. Great place to trim some cash from your grocery bill.

I think the ownership situation is a bit more complicated. There are two Aldi companies, Aldi Nord and Aldi Sud, which I believe are legally separate companies that cooperate quite a bit. They started out as one company, but split into two, with a brother each owning one of the companies. Aldi Sud owns Aldi in the US. The brother from Aldi Nord bought Trader Joe's, but I don't know if it's legally part of Aldi Nord.

So, you might say that Trader Joe's and Aldi are cousins.

This is all so bizarre. Back when I was fresh out of law school, I spent a short stint working for an insurance defense firm. One of the primary clients was Dominick's (pre-Safeway - this was years and years ago). We would defend various PI claims that happened at Dominick's stores and we also defended Aldi on similar claims, and I know it was the same client.

That lead me to believe that Aldi was owned by or otherwise part of Dominick's.

"Welcome to Trader Joe's. About all this 210-store U.S. chain shares with Germany's Aldi Group -- besides being owned by a trust created by Aldi co-founder Theo Albrecht -- is its rigorous control over costs. But where Aldi carries such basics as toilet paper and canned peas, TJ's, as it's known, stocks eclectic and upscale foodstuffs for the wine-and-cheese set at down-to-earth prices."

Since when is Boulder Junction in Michigan? Hey you can save $$ this year by going to the Super Walmart instead of Triggs! It looked like it was well on it's way to being done when we were up in January.

My mom's properties that we are selling are in BJ & Tomahawk...we have a place in Saugatuck, MI.

I will never go to the Super Walmart! I LOVE TRIGGS! That has to be one of the best-run grocery stores ever. Well, Trigg's and Nelson's in Tomahawk. Can you tell I'm sick of living in DuPage County? Big Grin

I like Triggs too, I was just commenting on the cheap food they will have at SW. I will NEVER eat anything from the prepared food section. Do you ever look at that stuff? I think it sits there for days at a time. Triggs is a weekly grocery trip… We go to Laporte's for the quick stuff or Wards when it’s real quick.

So, you're in Manitowish Waters then?

I think I bought some chicken at that prepared food area once in a weak moment and I lived to regret it! N-A-S-T-Y!

Glad to hear you're a Trigg's fan...I'm worried the stupid SW is going to shut them down. They should have put it in Mercer...they need something like that, Minocqua really doesn't with (3) independent grocery stores.

Yep we are...

Mercer has Snow's, it's better than Triggs. The only reason we don't go to Snow's more often is we do all our errands in Minocqua.

Wow, small world!
Have you been to Smokey's yet? It's our new favorite. I love the Tempura Blue Gills. Hard to believe it used to be The Oasis!
