The IOC rules state that proof of age must be presented and the (only?) acceptable form of identification/age is a valid passport. The Chinese athletes all had passports which "proved" that they are or will be 16 during calendar year 2008. I'm sure the officials picked a passport as proof of age because it is the one document that is basically uniform worldwide except for language.
It's a bit difficult for the IOC to say, thanks for complying with our rules, but we still don't believe you because, well . . . you're China.
All the "proof" that the media is uncovering is secondary proof. The passports say what they say, so I don't think anything will ever be done. Although I'm sure I'm not the only one wondering whether the team leader at age 20 and participating in her second Olympics is REALLY 20, because she would have been just 16 in Athens. Hmmm. . .
I posted a comment on the Olympics thread that wondered whether the athletes would be stripped of their medals should it be confirmed that they are underage. The answer, I found out, is a definitive NO.
A gymnast named Yang Yun stated in a recent documentary interview that she was 14 when she competed in Sydney. She won and individual bronze and a team bronze medal. I watched the interview on youtube yesterday. Went to post it here . . . it's been removed by the user. Sigh.
Hey IOC - There's an old saying: "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me." If the rule is going to stay in place, they are going to have to start officially recording the athletes names and ages when they are introduced to training at age 3 well before anyone knows who's going to be successful.

Are you going to be there too? If so, the first pimento cheese sandwich is on me...
I don't know anything about pimento cheese sandwiches but I sure have met a few of those pimento bugs. (OK, they aren't pimento bugs really. They're Palmetto bugs but my parents called them pimento bugs to freak us out about olives.) They breed 'em big in the south!
