They have finally made the announcement. New, young, fresh blood at the Chamber! The kind of person that will be a fresh face in the 'hood, perhaps even bring some business here instead of just shuffling it around from one space to the next! This person is gonna make a difference! Oh.....wait....

"Chamber hires directors

Glen Ellyn's Chamber of Commerce Monday announced that Georgia Koch and Mike Formento, a former Glen Ellyn village president, will be the new executive directors. Formento and Koch will work together as co-directors, replacing Kay Kendall, who announced her resignation in October. Kendall's last day at the chamber hasn't been determined. Koch and Formento are longtime Glen Ellyn residents with deep ties to the community. Formento is a DuPage County Forest Preserve District commissioner who previously has served on the DuPage County Board."

Well, I guess President of a COC is a fairly obscure position. Can't imagine the search firm really had a huge pool to pick from. Apparently Ms. Koch has no background other than longtime residency. Anyone know her?

I was hoping for someone younger than I am. Wink

I do know Georgia. She used to work for Mike at Formento Interiors. Nice lady. I didn't know her to be very involved in the Chamber, per say. Mike of course knows how to get things done, and in my opinion is a hard worker.

Not much to go by but this is what I know.

The WWW is not a wealth of information on Ms. Koch...which explains why the DH had little to say about her.

I guess we will wait and see what happens. But this town has the habit of placing its future in the hands of those that are living in the past. You want a town that is a little more forward-thinking and, dare I say it, cutting edge? Of course. Yet everyone involved in recruitment and maintaining business looks like they have not stepped into a store or salon since 1982 when Talbots sold garments that looked like rugs. And if I am saying they are out of date...given my out of date wardrobe...they are really out of date. Hell, not one person even mentioned the irony of Jim Louthen's necktie at the meeting last Monday. Mickey Mouse, indeed.

GEM...that's an odd string of events. What does it mean?

I believe that was mentioned in our private e-mails.

I was too shocked to bring it to the general public's attention.

Unfortunately, many around here making the decisions, probably thought that it was cute and endearing.

I found it to be laughable...pathetically laughable.

Your kidding? Aren't you? Confused

It was my understanding that the Formentos owned the former Spice & Easy Space, The old Formento Interiors space (on Cresent) and the Current Starbucks Space. (I believe the properties have changed hands since.)

You are a Landlord. . . Landlord Scotty. . .

You have three spaces all in a row.

In one space you have a well established business who's primary products are baked goods and coffee. (Really good baked goods made in house, not made last week and shipped on a truck)

In the next space you have your own business. . . Lets call it Scotty's Interiors

The next space is Vacant. . . .

Hmmmm What should Landlord Scotty put there????? I know. . . . . How about another coffee shop. . . . the one on the other side is doing so well! ! !

Do I need to go further???? Wink

That was my point. . .

If I'm Wrong. . . Well then I'm sorry. . . but if my memory serves me correctly that was the order of events.

Clam FYI: People don't purchase successful businesses to put them under . . That Guy (James VanPetten) lost half of his sales revenue to Starbucks. It was a wise decision on his part to cut his losses and close up. . . You don't keep your bad investments do you???

I could be wrong but I believe that just before Mike Formento left the Village Presidency (a two term President how dare he) there were plans to build a parking garage in the commuter lot across from McChesney. Maybe he wants another shot at it from a different angle.
I say give him a chance.

Fool me once. . . Shame on you
Fool me twice. . . Shame on me! I say we learn from experience. Do you remember how much money they spent on that stupid floral clock???

I didn't see anyone enjoying it tonight. . .btw. Its hands are gone for the season, so I couldn't even tell what time it was.

What do you think that Garage will cost? Mad

Anyhow. . What good is a garage if you fall on your a** trying to get up the sidewalk? Not to mention climbing over the mounds of snow to get from the street to the ice. . . I mean the sidewalk. I say we try clearing the ice and improving access before we spend all that money on a garage. . . . You can't count on the tenants/landlords to do it. . . Its not their sidewalk! Where are they suppose to put the snow? (Keep the smart a** answers to yourselves please!) Let the village do it. They collect a piece of the action. . They regulate the use and require permits to put signs, chairs, merchandise on it. . .They really ought to step up and maintain it if only for the sake of commerce! Heck, half of all the condos/apartments (Just north of the downtown post office, the complex on the south east side of park and the tracks) Those were built for seniors. so they had easy access to the train, stores, movies ect. When is the last time you saw a senior walking around the CBD after the first frost of the year?

Boy that felt good! Here let me clean your screen again! http://www.linein.org/media/screen_clean.swf

I am right there with you on cleaning and salting the sidewalks. To quote another resident recently, we need to treat our downtown like a shopping center. That means keeping it clean and safe.
As far as the parking garage goes. If we do build one we could get some $ from Metra to help defray some of the cost as many other towns do.
I am not sure Formento had anything to do with the clock I think that was Warks legacy but I will check.

I don't remember it playing out this way.

Here is what I remember. We moved to GE in '94. S&E was a thriving business serving breakfast, lunch...perhaps even early, liquor-free dinner. This is where it gets fuzzy. I believe the original owner sold the business to another guy who did not look like his last name could have possibly been Van Petten. That guy, from what I recall, completely alienated the clientele and the joint quickly fell out of favor with the locals. I recall it closing for a short period of time and then re-opening with other family members running it...then closing for good. I do remember them borrowing artwork from The Good Works Gallery to display in their restaurant for a while. That didn't work.

The above could be completely inaccurate, but that's the way I remember it.

Opening a Starbucks should have had little impact on a place like that. It was an institution. Yes, they sold coffee...but their primary business was serving bagels and sandwiches to stay-at-home Forest Glen parents (Go Eagles!!).

Also, if you are a property owner and Starbucks comes knocking on your door with a guaranteed check every month, are you going to turn them away? Or are you going to hang on to your bad investments...like Spice & Easy apparently was for the landlord of that building? It was a "wise decision" to lease space to Starbucks.

With regard to my investments...you are looking at a guy who has held Cisco stock since the $60 level. So...make your own assumptions on my investment abilities.
