Hmmm. Maybe we should ban the sale of ALL food at the parks. What if someone chokes on a stale pretzel? What if a kid gets a hot dog stuck in their throat? Lets make the parks REALLY safe!
Perhaps they could erect fencing around all the parks - like the one around the skateboard park, with a turnstile and a sign that says "enter at your own risk"

As for the dogs by the school, I understand prohibiting the dogs from school grounds. Unfortunately the power crazed administrators of district 41 once went so far as to claim we were not allowed to have our dog on the sidewalk across the street. They obviously make up rules as they please, cite "insurance" policies and other unsubstantiated laws (all in the hope you'll bow to their "superiority")

Have we lost sight of the fact that these are dogs? I love my black lab to death, but I still view him as a dog and therefore not subject to the same advantages us two legged animals. Dogs do unpredictable things, no matter how well trained. Why subject them or yourself to that kind of pressure when there is no real need.

When they make sidewalks and backyards off limits, then I will complain.

Sure, some dogs are not suited crowds, noise and being out in public. But for those of us who use common sense, should it be a crime to quietly enjoy a kids soccer game with our dog by our side?

http://www.chicagosuburbannews.com/glenellyn/homepage/x1663151516

The park district is clear in this article that not bringing a dog is "voluntary". Until they make it illegal, We will continue to enjoy our children's games with our trusted companion by our side.

“What we’ll do is go up to people and say, ‘Please, in the future, could you not bring your dog?’” said Recreation Superintendent Kathleen Esposito.

...and our response will be - "we will continue to bring our well trained, leashed dog to the public park until you make it illegal to do so."

A for sale sign will appear in front of our house if the park district, in their narrow-mindedness, decides to ban dogs from the parks in Glen Ellyn.

- Or until your well trained, leashed dog snatches out unexpectantly at my child or his ice cream.

Lets get a grip... there are worse things to be discovered in this town than losing the ability to sit with your dog at a soccer game.

Please don't. Then the Village gets $3.00 per thousand in transfer taxes, which just might be enough to pay officer chalk mark to go on dog patrol.

The park district can be really goofy sometimes, but I am believe their insurer caused a stir after the porch collapse cases were interpreted (wrongly, I think) by the Appellate Court. Insurance companies can really put out some silly doomsday scenarios, such as a dog biting the finger of a child with an ice cream cone.

I believe they are looking to assist their "tort immunity" status. If they show wanton disregard for safety, they are open to liability.

What about the wanton disregard for dogs who like ice cream?

If you want wanton disregard for safety, visit the play area next to the Splash Pad. Wow! I haven't seen dangerous toys like that on a playground since I was in grammar school.

Don't get me wrong, I think its refreshing to see! In their defense, there's about 3 feet of cushioning mulch under them. Not quite as sporting as the asphalt under the jungle gyms of my youth, but still, its good to see "manly" playground equipment making a comeback.

Ron:

I believe that the Ware v. L.G. Properties case (porch collapse case) went even further than that. In fact, the case said that a municipality has NO duty to the public to enforce their laws or ordinances, absent a special relationship and knowledge, by the municipality, of the particular risk to the particular person at the particular time. The rulling was an abomination. After this decision, the insurance company for the Village should have been doing high-fives and buying Dom for all of the claims managers as there is virtually no way a village or municipality can be liable for anything.

Maybe you know something that I don't know but I cannot believe that the Park District was required to issue this edict after the Ware opinion came down. Good for them for trying to make the parks safer. Shame on them for not giving people enough credit to 1) regulate their own pets and 2) discuss the conduct of a pets behavior that bothers them like civilized individuals with the owner. My bet is, this doesn't stick. Titus will be able to stay in Glen Ellyn.

I have a dog and because of his nature I would never consider bringing him to any event. He's a little on the aggressive side. I've coached and attended a large number of sporting events and people have brought their dogs and can't remember there ever being a problem. For people with kids and dogs I can see this as being a chance to kill two birds dog gets some exercise so does the kids.

I'm curious as to what prompted this new rule has their been any instances of dogs biting or snapping at kids.

So we have another law in this town that will just annoy a bunch of people
Like the one where Ice Cream trucks aren't allowed in town or that we can't park our cars on the street at night.

What I like is that the coaches/administrators are responsible for enforcing this rule. So what if some parent brings their dog does the coach get a ticket.

I can see why the GEPD needs help enforcing the laws in this town such a productive bunch. Today the lights where out at Roosevelt and Lambert. No cop directing traffic. But there was a cop sitting in his 40,000 Jeep at the Walgreens. Probably wanted to be ready to write an accident report.

Which he almost got to do. Some guy who didn't quite get the concept of taking turns decided to follow the guy in front of him who was turning S. onto Lambert from westbound Roosevelt. I was sort of shielded in my view and saw the first guy completing his turn and came close to putting my headlight into the second guy's passenger door. Would have been an interesting case but I stopped in time. (And I got to exercise my horn).

yes, there is a ban. but during events only.

here's an interesting story:

i was walking through the art show on the saturday of that wekend and saw a neighbor with her somewhat "jumpy-a$$" dog in the thick of the crowd (i use this term loosely -- the show was pretty sparse that day). ironically the neighbor is the adult child of a GEPD board member. it should also be pointed out that this 20-something "child" stills lives at home with said board member. i couldn't help but wonder how their conversation went as she was leaving for the art show:

child: "headin' to the art show. gonna take sparky" (name has been changed to protect the innocent cannine).

dad: "wanna take a few beers too?"

btw, you definitely wouldn't want a dog on the sidelines of a golden eagles game. one of those players could get hurt. . .
