If there's a more ridiculous idea for how to spend money in this town, I'd be hard pressed to come up with it. I'd rather see Holes and knolls expand to a 72-hole course.

I saw that today on my Google Alerts.

I said I would keep my mouth shut about the Park District.

I'd vote for 5 more memorials before I voted for a safety village.

Oh, and by the way, folks. I saw some people (out of towners) snapping some pictures in front of the (pretty) floral clock last weekend. So pooh! to the naysayers who think its a joke!

I agree. I find it amusing that they are asking for donations to build this village. They just got a lot of money from the ref. but are asking for more money to build a safety village.
I never understood the need to sign up for safety village.
I know in my house that's what we (the parents) are for - to teach our children safety; especially around the train tracks.

It's for the children.

I have no problem with SV. Kids seem to enjoy it. Teaches the lil' b@stards how to avoid the choo-choo cutting through town that lures so many to their untimely demises. Smoke house sounds kind of fun.

If the half mil is donated...what is the harm? A much better way to spend $$$ than that genius history park we are apparently pumping village dollars into. Hey, how about pumping village money into ridding the town of the gas station at Five Corners...or resurfacing a street or two...maybe replacing the rotting welcome signs on the border of town? Oh, what the hell. Let's build a park dedicated to Moses Stacy and his bearded wife.

Once again, have you heard A SINGLE PERSON express a desire for a saftey village, or comment that this would be something they would appreciate/use at that particular location?

Who in the hell is going to use this facility?

I'm wondering if this is some kind of taxable body reach-around, where the PD justifies building it so the schools can get credit for bussing the kids to it - all the while the taxpayers supporting both entities have no desire/use for it.

Quite right, Yigo. One of my clearest memories of my youth is Dad telling me about the kid who got his foot caught in the tracks at a crossing and got killed by a train. I still can't let my foot get close to the rail when crossing tracks.

Of course, there probably never was such a kid. But my kids have heard that story twice from me already, and seem well petrified. Score one for Dads.

I've yet to use the story, however, about the little kid who got his ear caught in the bottom of the escalator.

I have rarely had the delusional thoughts that this BB represents any more than the 20 or so citizens that regularly write stuff on it. The town has 27,000 residents...many of whom are delighted by the recreational and educational benefits that SV provides.

Yeah and the folks who attend school board meetings are just a vocal little minority.
And the hundreds who sign petitions are ...

Exactly who/where are these silent/faceless masses who support/appreciate these decisions?
And what exactly is wrong with "the 20 or so" of us who simply don't get it?

I think what Clamato may have meant is that 26,850 residents don't have a clue as to where their money is going and when a safety village pops up, they're likely to be amused and satisfied without ever thinking about where the money came from. Out of the remaining 150 people, 120 of them lurk on this board and nod, approvingly, 10 of the others are Park District workers/volunteers, and the final 20 are the posters on this board.

I've come to the conclusion that the 26,850 are the ones who have it all figured out.

I am going to do my best to become one of them.

Oh come on, how could you not be for a safety village?? Seriously, besides the kids enjoying it, what part of the typical safety village program are you against?

Here are a few of the things safety village teaches kids

Meeting firefighters, police officers, and paramedics – Do you know how many kids are afraid of them? Do you know kids often hide from firefighters in fire? Do you know how many kids run out to to the curb to watch the emergency vehicles as they go by? I can tell you it is a frightening experience to be driving an emergency vehicle and see a kid running towards it.

Appropriate use of 911 – They get to actually practice this.

Fire & burn safety – When was the last time you worked on this with your child?

Recognition of street & safety signs

Child passenger safety

Water safety/ice safety

Storm and tornado safety

Animal safety

Safety on wheels – Kids love this part!!!

Electrical safety

Stranger danger – You complain about all the homeless, this will reinforce the don’t talk to strangers.

Railroad safety – If you have ever seen a child that has been hit by a train, you will never forget it.

Bravo to the PD for starting a safety village!

Why because you want to kill the dogs across the street?

I couldn't have said it better myself and it saved me the time and effort to point all of this out. Bravo to Perplexed!

I have never been to a school board meeting. At least I don't recall ever attending one.

In my more cynical moments I have thought - The less I know about some of these local issues, the happier I am.

It is when you start paying attention that you really start to get peeved about how any expectations you have for local governing bodies are not being met.

People who don't worry about this stuff have a lot less wrinkles and fewer stress hormones coursing through their veins. It is appealing to just pretend everything is peachy. I'm going to do that as soon as I call the village about the potholes along my street - one entire lane is down to the dirt - and the grass not being mown at 5-corners and various vacant properties for sale.

Our kids did Safety Village when they were little, mostly because all of the neighbors were doing it and I didn't have to drive every day! Smile

No. I'm a pacifist. I want someone else to kill the dogs across the street.
