And truth be told, I could care less about a safety village - either way. I could care less about the Ackerman Super Sport facility - either way - as I will likely use it and enjoy it.

I just want our taxing bodies, specifically the Schools and Park Districts, to employ the "do we really really really need this" test.

When thinking about something, I want them to ask, "do we really really really need this." If that answer is "no". They should be required to ask another question. Do our citizens "really really really want it?" If that answer is yes, maybe they should proceed. If not, they should reconsider their decision.

If this test were employed - I think you would see a whole lot less strife than what we see.

A safety village, although nice, is not needed. It's kind of like the AMG-55 that I want. It's really nice, I really want it, but it doesn't make sense.

It's called restraint. I exhibit it with my money (although not enough) - I would like others to exhibit it with my money as well.

It will make more sense when you hit the big 4-0h. Smile

Could care less...or couldn't care less? You're confusing me, GE Fan Of Everything Nobody Supports.

Thanks you in advance for your clarification.

And SV...definitely needed. Truth be told, they should have a section on how to drive a Little Tykes Cozy Coupe over a mini mock up of a pothole infested Bryant Avenue.

Bravo to the PD for starting a safety village!

Can you name one of these things - ONE - that can't be taught in our existing class rooms or a parking lot with cones or temporary striping?

I just can't see the need for building a hobbit-sized village to teach this stuff. A hobbit sized village that takes up our beloved open space and will have a utilization rate of about 0.5%.

The only question I have is: What happened to the little Safety Village that was behind Spring Ave Rec Center? Isn't that enough? Do we really need to go to such expense to teach safety? I'm with Fan - the "Do we really, really, really need this test?" is a good one. I'd say no - at least not one that costs this much. Aren't kids supposed to be able to use their imagination? Heck, on the Today show earlier, a child psychologist was talking about what to do with your kids over the summer so you don't feel like a cruise director or teacher. She talked about cardboard boxes being selected by some organization as the best toy ever. So, have the kids paint a box that looks like a fire station, a police station. Have them draw RR tracks on the cement with their sidewalk chalk. That might cost a few hundred dollars to keep up for the summer!

For the record, my kids never attended Safety Village - we try to teach them all that stuff when we go for walks and bike rides. We've done so for ages...

Sorry, but I must be confused. Is there a particular reason you posted a very short list of some of the most basic of the myriad lessons any minimally responsible sentient parents teach their kids?

Supplement with school, scouts, YMCA, etc. as you see fit.

"We"...apparently...are not paying for it. The funds are coming from donations. Just like the Historic Theme Park was supposed to be. Tell me just what the hell we need that turd for?

BTW, you're all horrible people. all of you. Except perplexed.

How many of you would truly deny your children the harmless good times of dressing like the Village People? Horrible people.

WTF else are they going to do with it? Are we under some sort of ecstacy-driven spell that the PD will use your land in a way that pleases and benefits all?

No, but my preference for open, relatively undeveloped space that can be used for various purposes seems to conflict with the PD's apparent preference for paved single-use constructions.

You may recall I was opposed to the donation of public land to a private group who wished to install a 2d ping pong court or somesuch, so at least my position is consistent (or my ecstasy-driven spell is long-lived!)

Undeveloped space is for suckers.

Why do you care about Maryknoll, anyway? You can take a leisurely stroll over to Lake Ellyn Park anytime you'd like. Less than a mile from your house. BTW, you may want to use that in the marketing of that place this time around. Big Grin

Stop playing around, Clam, you KNOW this is a silly idea. And I'm with Dinsdale, I'd rather have green grass (or even scrubby Ackerman-woods type trees) than an underutilized safety village that, while we may get matching funds to build, is going to cost us operations and maintenance money.

Still there according the Park District Website Spring Ave. Facility

Must be so small that they can't possibly teach kids fire and burn safety there! Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin

Apparently the GE teardown phenomenon isn't restricted to human-sized buildings alone!

Check the online PD catalog link here. apparently the current safety village is good enough for summer camps of at least 17 kids (largest "slots remaining").

Is anyone not perplexed as to why we need a new Safety Village?

This popular program is designed to build a foundation of
safety awareness in young children. Safety Village has
become a local tradition in Glen Ellyn. The key curriculum
for all levels incorporates personal, pedestrian, passenger,
home and play safety in a fun atmosphere that develops
confidence, self-reliance and sound decision-making
abilities. This program is taught through a play philosophy
accomplished as children play and learn together. Children
learn how to handle specific safety situations such as being
approached by a stranger and how community workers help
people. Classroom visitors, games, crafts, music, stories,
films and role playing are a part of the safe behavior
instruction. No camp July 4 - fee for participants will be
prorated. (SW)

You gotta be kidding me! You gonna tell me that a town GE's size is gonna have TWO safety villages?

Amazing how I coulda survived growing up in Chicago where I never HEARD of such a concept!

In keeping with our town's vision, I would definitely contribute to a plan that involved tearing down an existing safety village that was appropriately sized and configured for its alloted space, to replace it with a safety megalopolis that towered over neighboring buildings and paved over the maximum land possible.

Im just thinking here, but wouldn't a new/larger safety village potentially exacerbate the existing overcrowding in our schools? Confused
