I've been thinking about joining a softball or volleyball league or something to get back into the swing of things. So while perusing the athletic offerings for the children through our park district, I decided to see what they have available for adults.

Quite frankly, I'm very bothered by the fact that most of the women's activities are geared toward crafting and domesticated things and that most of the sports for adults are men's leagues. I understand that there may not be all that many women in a community as ours interested in playing sports, but why not at least make those that aren't available for both Co-ed leagues? The only thing I found on there was A Co-ed softball program....only available on one night per week and it wasn't even overly clear whether or not it's a league or just like a pickup game....

Has anyone else noticed the lack of available women's sports in our park district? Does anyone else care, or am I the only adult female who enjoys exersize via sports rather than step-aerobics??

Thanks Graham....unfortunately, according to their website anyway, the only adult programs currently available are wallyball and adult volleyball....it would be nice if there were something local with a few more options.

Fish, I'm about to save the PD and you platform folks thousands of dollars. Here you go. You can get these for about $250 each. Maybe you can get the #1 poster to sponsor them since his name is on the side.

Think the Y also has a Racquet Ball league. Don't know if they have one for women or not

Lol @ Bio! Good, a bit of walking does everyone some good!

Fish & MI87, you guys are hilarious.... Big Grin

Thanks Taxpayer....maybe I should just stop in at the Y and see what they have. Their website leaves MUCH to be desired as far as user-friendliness is concerned.

Fish,
I saw some people playing paddle last night at around 6pm by Maryknoll. Looked like they were having a good time. IMO, any sport that can be played by kids or adults, during our cold winters, even in the dark, with a minimal amount of equipment, should rank higher in the PD budget! Smile

GESM2,
What sports are your friends into? I successfully avoided triathlons for a while, until the peer pressure became too much to bear.

I agree - and have never played it myself.

In all seriousness, you really should take a look at platform tennis. It is as much a women's sport as men's. Mixed doubles are also common; as well, it is not uncommon to have 3 men and 1 woman or the inverse on a court at once. I will grant you that at this time there are many more men playing platform tennis in Glen Ellyn, however that is directly attributable to the current lack of a 'nice' hut in my opinion as well as that of the American Platform Tennis Association.

Coveted: Most of my friends don't live in GE. Honestly, I don't have any real friends who do....acquaintances and such from the kids' activities, yes. Anyway, most of my friends aren't really into sports, either....I have a few on softball leagues, but they're not the kind that people who suck (as I believe I do, lol) can play on Smile

Triathalons could be fun....but I'd have to work up to the cardio for that one. I've become incredibily sedentary (plus I *gasp* smoke) and I want to change that, but it needs to be a gradual change if I don't want to kill myself, lol.

Marty, thanks for the tip. I honestly don't know what platform tennis is and have only played regular tennis once....

Not excuses, Graham....I'm looking for assistance in this matter and am going to do something. I just want everyone who's offering assistance to be aware of my situation. I also don't really want to join anything WITH someone, I prefer to do these things on my own.

Shore: I'm not proud to admit it, but I do. I don't do New Year's resolutions, either. If I want to change something, I just do it. No point in lining it up with the beginning of a new year. I will quit, I just have to want it and quite honestly (as it's my only vice) I don't want it right now.

Sorry GESM2. I have a strong knee jerk reaction to smoking. Once a nurse, always a nurse. I worked on a cardio-thoracic unit and when we weren't removing cancerous lungs we were repairing hearts damaged by smoking. Makes quite an impression. Good luck when you're ready.

No need to apologize, Shore. You didn't say anything offensive - or even anything that wasn't the truth *shrugs*

It's funny that you said once a nurse, always a nurse, though. When I was working on my undergrad degree at Robert Morris, I was the only business student who smoked....everyone else out on break was a nursing student. Perhaps it's only during study, but I've known quite a few medical professionals who do it. I just find that entertaining considering they should know better (of ALL people), lol.

I can't even imagine the things you've seen working there. That's one more reason why I don't want to quit yet, though. I want to build my heart and lungs up through exercize first so that when I do quit, I don't end up with pneumonia or something.

Thanks for the luck Smile I'm hoping not to need it, though. I "quit" for 3 years before and it wasn't as difficult as I thought it'd be, though that was almost 9 years ago.

The chief thoracic surgeon at George Washington Hospital died of lung cancer from smoking. He was so gifted. The Washingtonian Magazine wrote a wonderful article about his life and sad death. Even the best and brightest get addicted.

Anyway, you might want to look into our new Ackerman Sports Complex. I heard it's worth its weight in GOLD!
