Okay, these aren't my memories of GE since I only moved here 3 years ago, but I ran across an interesting book at the library called, "The story of an old town - Glen Ellyn" and it was written in 1928. This book states that before our fair village was called Glen Ellyn, it had 6 previous names...can you name any of them? Bonus points if you can put them in chronological order. I will give one of them away in the story below from the book. in 1867, "The County Court House moved from Naperville to Wheaton, with much bitter feeling. Naperville objected to giving up the records, so a party of men from Danby, including Amos Churchill and Marcellus Jones, joined a party from Wheaton, went over to Naperville one night, entered the Court House and carried away four books of records. They were attacked by Naperville men, the books being dropped in the street in the scuffle. The men of Naperville picked up the four books, took them to Chicago for safe-keeping and it is supposed they were lost in the great fire of '71 for they have never been found. To this day (1928) they are referred to as 'the lost records' and would be worth thousands of dollars if they could be found" I knew there was a reason I hated Naperville so much... It's the spending, Stupid!

If I remember correctly from grade school, the town was originally established at what is now 5 corners, and was called "Stacys Corners". GE was then known as "Newton Station" when the railroad came through, and shortly after named "Danby". I do not recall any other names tho...

DTM, I do not know the correct order. Here is the info. that I remember from my duaghter's third grade project. Stacy's Corner, Babcock Grove, Danby Station, Prospect Park and Glen Ellyn.

Dude... I don't think we are allowed to post Babcock here. Better to stick to something like Babrooster.

Good job Yigo, you got the most. Here is the order according to the book: Babcock's Grove DuPage Center Stacy's Corners Newton's Station Danby Prospect Park Glen Ellyn I think Stacy and Newton at the same time described different parts of what is now the same 'town'. Next question, what 5 settlements in DuPage county incorporated before Glen Ellyn did in 1834? It's the spending, Stupid!

I don't really have anything to say. I just wanted to get Robert Flanagan's name off the page. Though I will say that if they village has grand plans for that intersction...then my guess is that any of those corners are worth a hell of a lot more than the $300k the village is offering for the 2 story building on the SW corner.

That was their offer ? you've got to be kidding.

There was an article in one of the numerous GE papers a couple of months back that stated that the owners of the building were looking to get between $700K-800K (which...for a corner lot in a soon-to-be-hot intersection seems reasonable)...and that the village's appraiser said it was worth less than $300K...but the village was offering around $325K. Go figure. If I'm not mistaken, way back when that Stacy guy acquired his property from the original inhabitants for 3 candy necklaces and a maple Bun candy bar. I really hope no tax dollars are going into that project. But I'm certain I'll be disappointed when I found out that there are. I just hope to God that the elusive results of that art contest in '72 or '74 are safely stored in the GE Historical Society's vault

I forgot all about Bun candies.[/quote] You can still find them at Meijer's-in addition to a lot of other candy we had growing up!
