Ted - great picture. A little older than me, but I definitely remember Heintz drug store and Webb's and ate many a hamburger at Prince Castle, then **** Robin and many donuts at Spudnuts. We shopped at McChesney when it was where Schmidt is (they actually delivered to our house back then), and the A&P was where McChesneys is now. I worked at both Yankee Doodle and A&W - had the official brown polyester culottes and orange and white scarf. Thank goodness we didn't have to wear rollerskates.

We also used to go to a pancake house that was just west of the former Hesterman's bowling alley. There was also a miniature golf course next to the A&W for awhile.

I was really surprised to read that there was a Dairy Queen west of western - my mom grew up in GE, too, and never mentioned that. I remember some big hangout just next to the theatre, but I don't remember the name of it as I wasn't of "hanging out" age when it was around.

I don't know if someone mentioned it yet, but the building on the northeast corner of Main and Crescent was a Walgreen's for awhile and there was a Sears at Pennsylvania and Main (now Bananas).

There was a record store somewhere between Paul's Shoe Repair and Pennsylvania and also another bakery on that side of the street. We bought clothes at Mason's and "dry goods" - I remember asking my mother what dry goods were - at McAllister and Wallace. I remember mostly buying fabric there.

There was another fabric store south of the tracks and I also remember during the big snow of 1967 that there was a deli or small grocery store about where the wine store is now. I know it was there during the storm because I remember we had to walk there to get bread and milk since the streets were so bad

Einsteins was Color Corner (paint store), but I'm completely blanking of what was across the street before it was Tiffany's restaurant.

I'd love to see more pictures when you get them!

And let us not forget those three-stack cubical sherbet cones!

Which, when they built it, was the BIGGEST food store anyone had ever seen! (Hard to believe McChesneys has since expanded it.) And don't forget Krogers... where Antiques on the Avenue is now.

And the trampoline place, further West (as I recall). Broke my arm there.

Yup. My most vivid recollection of it was the huge display statue of a One-Eyed, One-Horned, Purple People Eater.

As I recall, in the mid-50s, it was only 1/2 the store width. The then opened the other half... and then the basement.

Maxine's. You could buy your favorite songs as either 78's or 45's. Just North of...

Kipkies. Best known for their cookies.

They had a "how to" book rack which included a "How to Draw Nudes" manual. The cover slways attracted the attention of us 12 year old boys. (We'd look at it out of the corner of one eye while pretending to look in a different direction.)

The gas company office, I do believe.

Gotta go listen to Mary Hopkins sing "Those Were The Days My Friend" now...

Such a small town - my ex-husband's grandfather was the horseradish producer.

And my2cents mentioned working at the travel agency which my brother worked at for years.

Also some of my family worked at Barone's for awhile.

I better stop before I lose my "anonymity"

Was Gee Lumber on Park where the former Hometown Pantry was? I seem to remember we would go there to get free scraps of lumber.

Lums had the best clam chowder and the Big Banjo was such a fun place to get pizza!

Wasn't Jewel at the other end of Market Plaza, too? I think there was another "dime store" type place in Market Plaza called Grants?

You are correct, Native. Jewel was roughly where Murray's Auto Parts is and was the western-most store in Market Plaza until about four more stores were added to the west. Grants was a five and ten type of department store that gave way to Kohls grocery store. When Kohls when out of business, Jewel moved down to its present location. There also was a Jewel on Butterfield where the Abbington is now for many years. It moved to Danada West...

I remember a time when the house directly across the street from me...no more than sixty feet away...was not the same identical color as mine, did not have the exact same windows as mine, did not have a black front door like mine, and did not have the identical, somewhat unique (at one time) address marker, albiet one digit off, as mine...not to mention that they got the same breed of dog as we have and it poops in the exact same yard that I own. Kind of eerie. Ah, memories.

I thought that was a Dominick's not a Jewel. Hmmm. I might need another cup of coffee this morning.

Dominicks was on Butterfield - at Finley, where Sports Authority is now. It was also in GE in the Binny's/Trader Joes space...

What a great thread...lots of warm memories. And, Ted, that is a terrific picture! I'd of been about 6 or 7 years old at the time the pic was taken (if the age is correct on the photo).

When I hear people complain about how dismal the education from public schools is these days, I am so thankful I went to school in DuPage County and, in particular, Glen Ellyn. I attended Main Street School (anyone know what it's used for now?), Lincoln Elementary, G.E. Junior High, and Glenbard West. My brother also went a year to Duane Street School, now the police department, I believe.

Remember Clubside which mysteriously burned down? Hi-Lo Liquors in Market Plaza, which was owned by my Uncle Bill (Thome)? The Flour Barrel? And, yes, Paul's Shoe Service, owned by our neighbor Paul Herwaldt (I believe his son is still running it...Doug, maybe?) And the Bobby Rivers Dance Studio where I took ballet. Wow...the memories come flooding back.

Two of my favorite childhood stores were (1) Woolworth's with their penny candy aisle and live turtles in the back left corner; and (2) Du Jardin's Book Store (the owner's wife, Rosamond, wrote the Pam & Penny books I loved!).

And I can think of at least 3 well-known people that also come from or lived in Glen Ellyn: Bobby Rahal, whom I went to Glenbard with; Ted Wass, ditto; and Sean Hayes from the TV show "Will and Grace." Can you think of any others?

Thanks for the memories! Keep the remembrances flowing.....
