It doesn't "support" Kindle, but it can be done Wink (sorry in advance, scribbler!)

Should work perfectly for nook or anything else that supports adobe (epub). You can read them on your pc through adobe digital editions, and I imagine that's how you'd read them on your iPhone as well.

We use the Sony Reader and the free Calibre reader software program.

The Sony is open-source allowing you to use any library's "Overdrive" system books, any purchased books, epub, and any text file or book in any format when managed with Calibre.

Calibre manages everything and also brilliantly, and easily, folds in complete magazines and newspapers from around the world. It even works seamlessly with subscriptions like to the New York Times. Calibre is a must have.

If your purpose in owning a reader is to read, and access, get an open-source non-proprietary reader. Do not get color or touch, stick to e-ink only and you will read without glare or strain for as long as you like. Backlit devices, color and even e-ink with a touch screen all fail to reach anywhere near the readability of straight e-ink. The Sony non-touch works perfectly. The difference between e-ink and e-ink with touch screen is the membrane that goes over the screen and adds glare in strong light conditions. Touch is getting better and is an issue only in times of higher glare risk, but do stay away from anything not using "e-ink". Most, but not all, readers from the different manufacturers use "e-ink".

Nombrilisme -

Can you download books from GEPL straight to the nook or the sony reader? Or must you download them to a computer first? If you download them to a computer first, can you transfer them to an ereader (using Calibre or directly) without stripping the DRM first?

Sorry, one more program, Digital Editions. Open the checked out book with this. And no, no DRM was harmed. Neither Calibre nor any of the other programs hacks or alters copyrights in any way.

A few of the readers are really closed proprietary systems and won't work with libraries or other normal sources.

Interesting. I figured there would be an issue trying to copy/move the file from adobe digital editions to the nook/sony reader, etc because adobe digital editions puts a time limit on how long you can read the book.

As long as people are paying for downloads, or "checking" them out officially from the library, I don't care. It's the piracy that, quite naturally, burns my biscuits (as well as the biscuits of every writer I know).
